School Library Journal - School Library JournalGr 5-8-- These nine short stories include tales of magic, the supernatural, witchcraft, mystery, fairy tales, and fantasy. Mahy's language is full of imagery and has the ring of traditional folklore. Each short, deceptively simple entry includes allegorical and/or metaphysical elements to contemplate and explore. The selections are varied and always surprising, requiring readers who are open to often startlingly fantastic situations. Catchpole's drawings enhance the stories and add to the collection's overall enchantment. An unusual collection for classroom reading and discussion as well as for reading aloud. --Yvonne Frey, Peoria Public Schools, IL

I've never read another book like this one. I haven't read it in over a decade but this book stays with me. I was about thirteen when I read it and am now 26. Margaret Mahy is a wonderfully vivid and amazing story teller. I am positive that if you give this a chance, you will love it as much as I have.
