Dean Koontz was born in Everett, Pennsylvania, and grew up in nearby Bedford. He won an Atlantic Monthly fiction competition when he was twenty and has been writing ever since. Mr. Koontz's books are published in 38 languages. Worldwide sales total more than 175 million copies, a figure that currently increases at a rate of more than 350 million copies a year. Dean and his wife, Gerda, live in southern California.

Biography

He is one of the most recognized, read, and loved suspense writers of the 20th century. His imagination is a veritable factory of nightmares, conjuring twisted tales of psychological complexity. He even has a fan in Stephen King. For decades, Dean Koontz's name has been synonymous with terror, and his novels never fail to quicken the pulse and set hearts pounding.

Koontz has a lifelong love of writing that led him to spend much of his free time as an adult furiously cultivating his style and voice. However, it was only after his wife Gerda made him an offer he couldn't refuse while he was teaching English at a high school outside of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, that he had a real opportunity to make a living with his avocation. Gerda agreed to support Dean for five years, during which time he could try to get his writing career off the ground. Little did she know that by the end of that five years she would be leaving her own job to handle the financial end of her husband's massively successful writing career.

Koontz first burst into the literary world with 1970's Beastchild, a science fiction novel that appealed to genre fans with its descriptions of aliens and otherworldly wars but also mined deeper themes of friendship and the breakdown of communication. Although it is not usually ranked among his classics, Beastchild provided the first inkling of Koontz's talent for populating even the most fantastical tale with fully human characters. Even at his goriest or most terrifying, he always allows room for redemption.

This complexity is what makes Koontz's work so popular with readers. He has a true gift for tempering horror with humanity, grotesqueries with lyricism. He also has a knack for genre-hopping, inventing Hitchcockian romantic mysteries, crime dramas, supernatural thrillers, science fiction, and psychological suspense with equal deftness and imagination. Perhaps The Times (London) puts it best: "Dean Koontz is not just a master of our darkest dreams, but also a literary juggler."

Good To Know

Shortly after graduating from college, Koontz took a job with the Appalachian Poverty Program where he would tutor and counsel underprivileged kids. However, after finding out that the last person who held his job had been beaten up and hospitalized by some of these kids, Koontz was more motivated than ever to get his writing career going.

When Koontz was a senior in college, he won the Atlantic Monthly fiction competition.

Koontz and Kevin Anderson's novel Frankenstein: The Prodigal Son was slotted to become a television series produced by Martin Scorsese. However, when the pilot failed to sell, the USA Network aired it as a TV movie in 2004. By that time Koontz had removed his name from the project.

"My wife, Gerda, and I took seven years of private ballroom dancing lessons, twice a week, ninety minutes each time. After we had gotten good at everything from swing to the foxtrot, we not only stopped taking lessons, but also stopped going dancing. Learning had been great fun; but for both of us, going out for an evening of dancing proved far less exhilarating than the learning. We both have a low boredom threshold. Now we dance at a wedding or other celebration perhaps once a year, and we're creaky."

"On my desk is a photograph given to me by my mother after Gerda and I were engaged to be married. It shows 23 children at a birthday party. It is neither my party nor Gerda's. I am three years old, going on four. Gerda is three. In that crowd of kids, we are sitting directly across a table from each other. I'm grinning, as if I already know she's my destiny, and Gerda has a serious expression, as if she's worried that I might be her destiny. We never met again until I was a senior in high school and she was a junior. We've been trying to make up for that lost time ever since.

"Gerda and I worked so much for the first two decades of our marriage that we never took a real vacation until our twentieth wedding anniversary. Then we went on a cruise, booking a first-class suite, sparing no expense. For more than half the cruise, the ship was caught in a hurricane. The open decks were closed because waves would have washed passengers overboard. About 90% of the passengers spent day after day in their cabins, projectile vomiting. We discovered that neither of us gets seasick. We had the showrooms, the casino, and the buffets virtually to ourselves. Because the crew had no one to serve, our service was exemplary. The ship dared not try to put into the scheduled ports; it was safer on the open sea. The big windows of the main bar presented a spectacular view of massive waves and lightning strikes that stabbed the sea by the score. Very romantic. We had a grand time.

    Exilaratng!

    Ive been looking for a new interesting book for quite sometime and Ive read a lot so it takes something pretty intese to get me interested. This book drew me in right away, I was hooked by the first chapter and finished it in a couple days. I hated putting it down. I sort of figured out what "it" was halfway through but it was still a thoroughly enjoyable book. The characters were strong and relatable and the plot kept the pages turning. My ony complate was that *spoiler alert!* I wish Koontz would've ended the book with a happily ever after kiss between the two main characters. All in all 4.5 stars (harry potter is the only book i give 5 stars too ;)) I highly recommend it!

    read a lot of better Koontz books...

    Overall the beginning and ending were good, but the middle part just dragged on. I couldn't get through the parts where Mondale and Haldane are constantly being sarcastic to one another. It really ruined the book for me and I even had to skip through a few pages because I had enough of their bickering. Haldane didn't have a likeable personality and Laura was so boring. I forced myself to finish the book, but was pleasently surprised at the ending. I really wanted to read more on Melanie's rehabilitation though.

    MUST READ!!!

    This is exactly the kind of book that always has me coming back for more! From the time you begin reading, you are constantly wondering whats next and never stop. Highly recommend this book to anybody looking for a fast-paced book with that Dean Koontz feel that so many people love. One of his best books, period.

    Koontz is a Master at Suspense and the Macabre

    I read this book sereral years ago. I found this book to be one of his better ones. I started reading Dean Koontz books about 20 years ago with the book" Watchers" but the best one was "Lightning" Mr. Koontz deifinately has a flair for the weird. I highly recomend Koontz.

    I finished this on 12/25. I started it at the beginning for December thinking it was a Christmas book. It had nothing to do with the holidays. It was a very good book, but I don't want to give anything away.

    Always Creative

    Koontz is always good for a satisfying plot and an axiety ridden thrill. I am not always as involved with his characters as I am with other writers but I am never dissapointed with the plot progression or the climax of his stories. This book was actually reccomended to me by my best friend, who claims it changed her life. I spent years searching the shelves for it and, finally, got lucky. I don't know that it has changed my life, but it had some impact on my intellectual process while I was reading it. I am not Koontz obsessed, but this book, along with the Odd Thomas series, will keep me investing into his creativity. And... I don't think there is a better thing than creativity that I could invest in.

    The Door To December leaves you perched upon a seat waiting to delve into Koontz's mind yet again.

    Every Koontz book is a new and different book. In Door To December you
    hold the book tight to find out what will become of the littlest
    character. Koontz always uses a touch of reality and a twist to keep
    us turning the pages. In this book I dont wish to give anything away
    but we are left with compelling characters that we once again side with.
    Siding with them keeps us page turning for justice and sometimes that is achieved read this and see................

    premier voice performance

    Obie award winner George Guidall is a premier voice performer. Although active on Broadway, in films and on television, he still has found time to narrate some 800 unabridged novels. He's versatile - tackling comedy, drama, and dark thrillers, such as The Door to December. Suspense novels tend to produce a maximum number of goose bumps when a child is involved, and that is certainly the case with this fiendish tale from Dean Koontz. Melanie is just three-years-old when she's abducted by her father and taken to a laboratory where she is forced to participate in ghastly experimentation. Her mother, a psychiatrist, is distraught but does not see her daughter again until six years later when now nine-year-old Melanie is found on the streets of L.A. It's obvious that something diabolical has happened to the girl. Yet whatever dire damage done to her is not enough as soon those involved in the experimentation are killed and it seems that the final one to lose her life will be Melanie. Who is committing the murders and why? This is Dean Koontz at his best abetted by the talented George Guidall - don't miss it! - Gail Cooke

    First Book i have read by him

    this is one of the best books that i have read by him! The Door To December was the first book by Koontz i have read. what made this book was the foreshadowing, conflict, and the way the plot unfolds.

    A Great Flowing story!

    Koontz uses very vivid and descriptive writing! This book will keep you turning the pages with something surprising popping up around the corner. Very nice ending. Loved this book! ***Some mature content for young folks***

    My first Dean Koontz read and i'm hooked

    A friend recommended the book, and I dont read often. However, Koontz had me within the first 2 pages. I would recommend it to anyone who loves a thrill.

    First one i have read of this author

    I really enjoyed this book. I mainly read Stephen King books but someone gave me 'The Door to December' and i enjoyed it very much. I hated to put it down. I will look forward to reading any more books that i might come across.

    this story was way too long...

    started out interesting. Figured out the ending mid-way through the book. Very hard to get to the end. Sort of dragged. characters were not at all likeable. Dan was so bitter and sarcastic very hard to like. Laura was blah. It was sitting on my shelf for months before I picked it up. Read it and now it's sitting on my public laundry room.

    I was going to give it 3 stars, but gave it an extra because of a great endding.

    This isn't one of Dean Koontz's best, but still ok. There aren't very many scary parts in it. There are a few and they are good. The Door to December isn't one of those books that you just want to read for the whole day, it's more like the kind of book that you would take to school or work if you had any spare time. It had a great ending though, so that's why I gave it the extra star. It could of been better too. But oh well. If you are a first time read of Dean Koontz's books, don't read this one first. Ya'll would be happier reading Watchers as your first Dean Koontz book. Not this one.
