Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-Inside and outside views of everyday life in 12 houses on a neighborhood street are observed through split pages. The line-and-watercolor illustrations portray a busy, middle-class, integrated neighborhood; people of all ages are moving in, redecorating, sending and receiving love letters, having parties, going to work, catching robbers, getting bitten by dogs, and losing a pet mouse. The pictures are full of detail and activity. Unfortunately, the accompanying inane six-line verses about the inhabitants of each house confuse more than they illuminate. The times of day and the seasons change from page to page: Dan in #4 writes a sweet note in late spring to Amanda Klein in #9, and she receives it in the fall. Could it be that Joe the mailman (the one who is bitten by the dogs in #8) is out of commission for quite a long while? Satisfying the universal curiosity about what happens in other people's homes is a good theme, but the execution here is less than satisfying.-Carolyn Jenks, First Parish Unitarian Church, Portland, ME
