    this is not 'phonics'

These books are proof positive that you can capitalize on a popular character, slap the name 'phonics' on it, and get poor well-meaning parents to buy it. These books are terrible, and a poor excuse for phonics. The books mix long and short vowel sounds in the same book, use complex dipthongs with abandon, and use long words, all of which are inappropriate for level 1 phonics. Your kids will memorize the books pretty quickly, but they won't learn to read from this set. If you want to teach your kids to read, buy something else, like the innovative kids sets. (FWIW, my four-year-old can read basic phonics books, and has memorized lots of long and difficult books ... if you want to know your child is actually reading, you need to know the difference.)

    Working for us

We started this set reading one page each night (maybe two if she was feeling spunky), and now at book 4 my daughter can go from beginning to end in the same night. She enjoys reading about all of her friends from the TV show, and the text is in familiar 'Dora' style using many of her mannerisms. Most of the words are short, and would fall into the 'sight' words category, but there are occasional 'difficult' words for her to overcome. We've come across the words right, enough, butterflies, and unstuck, and while some are harder than others, she's remembering that she's seen them before in other books from the set. I definitely see an increase in her confidence since starting this set, and she's moving forward into a comprehension stage where reading is becoming more than just figuring out how to say the word on the page.

    A reviewer

Another television franchise. Hopefully it won't get as bad as Disney.
