Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
This oversized book does justice to the oversized creatures known as dinosaurs. Lambert defines what a dinosaur is and then sets the stage with views of the earth and a general description of plant and animal life during the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. A great picture of dinosaurs set in a modern city really brings the size comparisons home. Pictures of skeletons and artists renditions of the flesh and blood animals fill the pages with enough gore to satisfy thrill seekers. Plenty of information and great pictures will help report writers, and there is enough appeal to rope in the casual readers. The backmatter includes a page of "Dinodata," a dinosaur family tree, and an index. 2000, DK Publishing, Ages 8 up, $19.95. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
From The Critics
This large format book offers beautifully illustrated, two-page presentations about dinosaurs, prehistoric eras, dinosaur sizes (compared to our world), dinosaur locomotion and anatomy, flying dinosaurs, marine dinosaurs, plus dinosaur predation and defenses. An interesting speculative treatment of "dinobirds" is included, plus information on fossils, fossil hunting, and reconstruction efforts. The guide also includes timeline, a pronunciation table, dinosaur records, a glossary, an index, a list of web resources, and a two-page chart of dinosaur types. For dinosaur enthusiasts age ten and older. 2000, DK Publishing, $19.95. Ages 10 to 12. Reviewer: M. Henebry SOURCE: Parent Council Volume 8
School Library Journal
Gr 2-7-Some librarians may wonder where to shelve such an oversized item, but this exceptionally appealing guide won't stay in the library long enough to worry about it. The vivid illustrations are riveting. One page imaginatively places a Gigantosaurus and Barosaurus on a modern city street to convey the huge proportions of these creatures. Other pictures are set in prehistoric swamps and forests or underwater lairs to portray dinosaurs in their environments. The facts are up-to-date, and diagrams and captions help to explain concepts such as how dinosaurs used their tails, how pterosaurs flew, and how fossilized teeth give clues as to what dinosaurs ate. Though there's plenty of material here for reports, the best use of this volume will be for transporting readers back to ancient times when these scaly giants ruled the Earth.-Cathryn A.
