It took eight years for the Wonderful Wizard to make his way back to Oz in 1908. The return was all but inevitable. In Baum's introduction to Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz, he is clearly resigned to delivering what thousands of children had been clamoring for: "Oz -- Oz! More about Oz, Mr. Baum!" In the two installments in the Oz series that bridged Wonderful Wizard to this volume, Baum earnestly worked to expand the scope of his fairy-tellings beyond the confines of his first Oz book. The Land of Oz had a host of new characters whose adventures explored expansive themes in gender roles and self-determination. Indeed, Baum only brought Dorothy back in Ozma of Oz amidst another new cast of characters and set the action predominantly in the neighboring country of Ev.
But in Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz, Baum recognizes that his readers have a deep-seated love for Oz and long for a reunion of Dorothy with the eponymous humbug wizard from the original story. The result is one of the most light-hearted adventures in the entire Oz series. Baum seems to simply allow himself to have fun in crafting this adventure, and though there are many dark and frightening trials facing Dorothy and her companions, the story is delivered without the weighty themes and heavy consequences of the prior three books.
