Meet the Author

Pedro Antonio Joaquín Melitón de Alarcón y Ariza nació en Guadix, Granada, 10 de marzo de 1833 y murió en Madrid el 19 de julio de 1891. De familia humilde aunque provenía de hidalgos, fue enviado a Granada a estudiar leyes en la Universidad, pero abandonó esos estudios para iniciarse en la carrera eclesiástica, que también dejó en 1853 para marchar a Cádiz. Fundó El eco de Occidente, junto a Torcuato Tárrago, y de este modo inició su carrera periodística. Se trasladó en 1854 a Madrid, allí creó un periódico satírico, El látigo, con ideología antimonárquica, republicana y revolucionaria. En 1857 escribió El hijo pródigo, drama que obtuvo gran éxito. Estuvo como periodista en la guerra de África, de esta experiencia surgió Diario de un testigo de la guerra de África, en 1859. Más adelante cultivó la literatura de viajes, contando en diversos artículos sus viajes por Italia (recogidos en De Madrid a Nápoles, 1861) y su Granada natal (La Alpujarra, 1873). Como miembro de la Unión Liberal ostentó diversos cargos, como el de consejero de estado con Alfonso XII, en 1875, o el de diputado, senador, y embajador en Noruega y Suecia. Además fue académico de la Real Academia de la Lengua desde 1877. Su obra cumbre es El sombrero de tres picos, que inspiró, a su vez, la obra de Manuel de Falla. La obra literaria de Alarcón se sitúa en el paso del prerrealismo al realismo, con cierta remembranza romántica. La incesante actividad del autor en el campo periodístico con crónicas, artículos políticos, cuadros de costumbres, relatos, críticas literarias, se plasmó en algunos de sus libros.
