Children's Literature - Ramirose I. Attebury
Putting together an age-appropriate predictable rhyming and counting book that sounds good in both English and Spanish is no small undertaking. This petite board book accomplishes that feat. By reading this book based on the premise of a young boy taking his grandfather to the zoo, young readers will encounter pleasant rhymes that take them through the numbers one to ten. Each full-page color spread contains adorable illustrations showing the boy, his grandfather, and the animals they are counting. The left-side text contains two lines describing the animals; the predictable text on the right simply says, "We count/Y contamos" followed by the appropriate number. Children who are able to count from one to then will have no trouble joining an adult reader to complete each rhyme. A bear, parrots, alligators, lions, penguins, lizards, eagles, spiders, flamingos, and wart hogs all make an appearance. This book would make an excellent addition to any children's collection. Public libraries of all sizes will undoubtedly see good circulation stats for this choice, and teachers or librarians in schools that offer any kind of Spanish language instruction would do well to recommend this selection to their students.
