Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
Dash and Dot are going to see their friends. They are bringing the things they love most. Dot brings one backpack while Dash brings two toys. Tall (a giraffe) brings three items, Big (an elephant) brings four, and Small (a mouse) brings five. They have a picnic together, although there are more items at the picnic than they bring. Young children can work on their counting skills as they place stickers on each page. However, they do not add the full count with stickers, for some of the multiple objects are already shown. For example, there are three balls but the child only adds one sticker. The final picnic scene is very busy and confusing for young children who are the intended audience. The numbers 6 through 10 are added. The bees and the butterflies are so close together that a young child will have difficulty counting each separately. Adding the numerals gives the picnic scene a very cluttered look. This is a very weak counting book. While the characters are called "friends" it is not a story about friendship. Because it includes stickers this paperback is intended to be a personal copy. Save your money for better counting, Valentine's Day, and friendship books. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo
