Overview

As the new owners of Pettistone's Fine Books, Darla Pettistone is determined to prove herself a worthy successor to her late great-aunt Dee...and equally determined to outwit Hamlet, the smarter-than-thou cat she inherited along with the shop. Darla's first store event is a real coup: the hottest bestselling author of the moment is holding a signing there. But when the author meets an untimely end during the event, it's ruled an accident-until Hamlet digs up a clue that seems to indicate otherwise...

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
This cutesy first in a new cozy series from the pseudonymous Brandon (Diane A.S. Stuckart) introduces Darla Pettistone, owner of Brooklyn’s Pettistone’s Fine Books, and Darla’s imperious cat, Hamlet. To Darla’s delight, YA author Valerie Baylor will be making Pettistone a stop on her tour for her third book in her bestselling Haunted High paranormal series. With an expected crowd of 500 excited teenage girls, Darla has to worry only about a lone protester, who accuses Baylor of plagiarism, and a nutty letter from a fundamentalist, whose fellow church members may picket. When Baylor meets an unexpected end outside the shop, Darla and her tenant, ex-cop Jacqueline “Jake” Martelli, do a little investigating on their own, prompted by unusual and enigmatic clues provided by Hamlet. Those who like clever animals but draw the line at talking cats will feel right at home. (Dec.)
Library Journal
After inheriting a Brooklyn bookstore from her great-aunt Dee, Texas gal Darla Pettistone moves to New York City. She scores a coup by nabbing hot YA author Valerie Baylor (think Twilight fervor) for a store signing. Trouble is, there's a pesky protestor on site, potential religious activists threatening to disrupt things, and a less-than-charming support team traveling with Valerie. Still, all is going well until Valerie steps outside for a smoke and her ultimate death. A hit-and-run case or an accident? Determined to get to the bottom of the incident, Darla helps hunky police detective Reese investigate. Naturally, Darla also learns to pay attention to Hamlet, her bookstore cat who points out clues. VERDICT You can't argue with the magical cats formula: Hamlet is a winner, and so is his owner. The literary references in this endearing debut will make readers smile, and the ensemble characters hold promise for fun titles to come. Brandon is the pen name of Diane A.S. Stuckart, author of the Leonardo da Vinci mysteries (A Bolt from the Blue).

    more from this reviewer

Shows Promise for 1st in series

For a first in a series, this book shows promise. I liked the characters and hope to learn more about them in the next in the series. They seem like an odd mixture to have become friends, but that just adds to the enjoyment in my mind. I think you have to have owned a cat to really appreciate Hamlet and his antics. I laughed out loud in many places where Hamlet was expressing himself. (If you are well read enough to appreciate the many literary references found throughout you will enjoy it even more). I look forward to book number 2.

Good writing, great mix of characters, and a cat who is as independent as they come. Hope this is going to be a long and successful series.

    A great Cozy Mystery!!

I enjoyed this book! Its a great cozy mystery set in a bookstore with its own prowling feline who has a great taste in books.

The characters and story are well-written. The ending (i thought) was going in one direction but then took a good turn to discover the true murderer.

If you enjoy Carolyn G Hart's series with "Annie Darling" and the bookstore in the Carolina's (minus all the mystery novel trivia), then you will enjoy this first in a NEW series!

    I highly recommend it.
