Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Krisan Murphy
In a bungalow near the Santa Monica beach, twelve-year-old sisters, Carlie and Sammy, find out just how different their lives can be even in the same household—even though they are ranked doubles tennis player and even though they are twins. Sammy narrates this coming-of-age story about the summer their family lived in a resort community while their dad coached tennis. Charlie chooses friends from the rich kids, and Sammy's best friend is Alicia, the daughter of the grounds keeper. When Alicia's twin cousins from El Salvador arrive for a visit, Charlie is confronted with the blatant racial prejudice Oscar and Eddie experience. It is not just racial prejudice, but shunning Oscar endures, because of his club foot. He has traveled to the area for corrective surgery. Just when a sense of unity and success is on the verge of blossoming, Oscar is a victim of discrimination and injustice that jeopardizes his operation. This fast-paced is packed with tension, realistic adolescent struggle, and humor. Students will applaud the choices Sammy makes when she goes outside her comfort zone to bring about justice. No doubt readers who enjoy this book will want to read the other two books in this series. Reviewer: Krisan Murphy
