Winner of the Juniper Prize, this volume of Jacobikþs impressionistic verse celebrates feeling over intellect (þone can over- think a thingþ), which partly explains her lack of clarity in poems that awkwardly incorporate cultural allusions into an odd polysyllabic vocabulary. In þThe Election,þ Jacobik declares herself the true heir to Anne Sexton (þnot a great poetþ), but without Sextonþs fears and mad self-absorption. Instead, she embraces the everydayþþThereþs too much of life to take inþþin her affirmations of her own sexuality, music, and nature. But her imprecision causes sentimentality and confused thinking: In þThe Breakfast Room,þ she speaks of þephemerality become tangibleþ; in þLines,þ her distinction between how we read prose and poetry is simply odd; and in þFiguration,þ about her poet friend who þeschews metaphor,þ she reveals her own misunderstanding of poetics. Anecdotal poems find little justification beyond their peculiarity: A man in an elevator ejaculates against her skirt (þDarknessþ); an afternoon sexual encounter takes places in the house where Clover Adams committed suicide (þA Prelapsarian Mood Pieceþ). Dead deer and a crow eating a þsmall creatureþ make Jacobik think, not surprisingly, of deathþtypical of the tautological imagination displayed here.
