Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Ex-cop and computer hacker extraordinaire Davis Way is hired by a Biloxi, MS, casino to work as a security expert and catch sneaky gamblers who try to scam the business. She's not thrilled with the job since she would rather be a real cop. Plus Davis suspects that her employers are shady. The biggest problem is that her goofball ex-husband is one of the gamblers the casino wants her to bring down, and Davis doesn't quite agree with their methods. Davis soon figures out that her employers have scary Las Vegas connections and that dead bodies fit into their equation. Since she's correct in thinking her employers plan to leave her holding the bag (that would be an attempted murder charge), Davis has every reason to fear for her future. VERDICT Archer navigates a satisfyingly complex plot and injects plenty of humor as she goes. This madcap debut is a winning hand for fans of Janet Evanovich and Deborah Coonts.
Kirkus Reviews
A jackpot job turns into snake eyes when a casino investigator gets caught in a case of mistaken identity. Biloxi, Miss., isn't a long way from Davis Way's hometown of Pine Apple, Ala., but she hopes it's far enough to help her forget her double-crossing ex, Eddie. Relocating for a security investigation job at the Bellissimo Resort and Casino is the smartest thing Davis has done for some time. The job gives her free room and board, as well as an extensive wardrobe, to do things that come easy to her: digging up dirt on casino computer programs and employees alike. After a few successful missions, Davis' new employers are ready for her to tackle more serious cases, revealing that there was much more to her hiring than she originally suspected. Now Davis is in real trouble. Evidently one of the reasons for her employ is none other than Eddie, a man she had the misfortune to marry twice. Davis realizes that her connection to Eddie isn't the only thing her employers are trying to exploit when she winds up in the middle of a case of mistaken identity and headed to prison. Her dreamboat absentee landlord, Bradley Cole, may be her only hope of keeping her jail cell from becoming her home. Archer's debut provides more evidence for the adage that bigger isn't always better. The small-scale mysteries thrown Davis' way have more charm than the finale, which gets confusing in its complexity.

I want to be Davis Way's friend. Not many books leave me feeling that way about the main character. While reading Double Whammy, I felt that Davis' personality was so authentic that she may be a real person instead of a character in a mystery novel. She's smart, sassy, and just the right amount of flawed. I loved her.  Gretchen Archer did a fantastic job. I didn't want to put the book down, even the second time I read it and already knew what happened.  Sign me up to read #2.

Gretchen Archer proves imaginative, witty in this first of the "Double Series." Enjoyed it - it's longer than some and I like it. Strong character development. Innovative plots and story line.

This is a fun book to read. It had some fun twists and turns. The main character, Davis Way, is likable and has potential for being a good series character. Reminds me a little of Stephanie Plum. The only issue I had was the author doesn't know firearms, but most people make the same mistake between clips and magazines. .

I enjoyed this book. It gets a bit confusing at spots, but it's a funny, good read. I enjoyed it. Quirky characters, fast paced, you will enjoy it.

Very Good Read - Double Whammy........I do frequent casinos, so that alone appealed to me. I am a huge fan of Stephanie Plum, so the mere mention also caught my eye. I absolutely loved this book. Mystery, unusual situations, quirky characters, underdog battling the bullies. I didn't like the time in jail, but appreciated the humor and the lack of smut. Minimal romance but a fun hero, and who could deny a daddy's girl as our hero?

My Review: Double Whammy 4 STARS This was a funny mystery with lots of gambling frauds. The characters are interesting. Some funny. the suspense of everything was good to the last. A little bit boring on the gambling facts but they needed to be their to show how they cheated. Davis Way is the main character. No one believes that is a real name and causes her a lot of grief. She has a lot of problems in her past. She is smart and figures out ways of how the crooks are cheating. Her new job has a lot of secrecy about it. She is smart to not to trust everything, but still gets into lots of trouble. She develops a crush on the lawyer who sub-leased his apartment to her. Their are so many secrets about the casino and the different people she meets. She has a lot of disguises with different identities for different undercover jobs to figure out how their cheating. She keeps hiring a cab that the driver does not want to work and is rude to her but he also helps her and is interesting relationship. Davis family relationships is messed up. She is her daddy daughter and Her mom is not happy with her. Her ex-husband twice she does not have good relationship with at all. I can't wait to read the next Davis Way Mystery. I was given this ebook to read and asked by NetGalley to give honest review of it. Published May 14th 2013 by Henery Press 306 pages ISBN:1938383362

Pure Fun!! I loved this book! Gretchen Archer has created a character I want to hang out with often. Davis Way is witty and smart, and while she's gotten herself into trouble rather spectacularly, Archer does an excellent job of showing us the layers of the character and what makes her tick. The casino setting is well drawn and interesting, and Archer weaves it into the story well so that the plot moves along at a fast clip. I'm eagerly awaiting the next Davis Way mystery!

After a little misunderstanding with her ex-ex-husband, Davis Way finds herself in need of a new career and a new life. Desperate for work, she takes a complicated undercover job at a casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. But her dream job isn't as fab as advertised. She can't quite trust her boss or his secretive secretary. The cabbie who lives out of his car and gives her occasional advice and reluctant rides seems to know more than he's telling. And somehow, her jerk of an ex-ex-husband is involved in scamming the casino. Davis is determined to sort it all out, but as her life unravels, can she stay out of trouble long enough to catch a killer and solve a whammy of a mystery? Gretchen Archer has crafted a character in Davis Way that is engaging, smart, and snarky, with a tenacious attitude that gets her into brilliant complications. While Double Whammy was laugh out loud funny (seriously--I was reading at the doctor's office and started cracking up before I remembered where I was), all of the characters showed depth and emotion that made this book a thoroughly pleasurable read. I loved every second of it and can't wait for the next installment.

Gretchen Archer debuts with a novel that should put her on "emerging authors to watch" list. Her distinct voice brings humor to the pages of a byzantine mystery that puts her heroine through the wringer. The protagonist, Davis Way from Pine Apple, Alabama, is a character you want to adopt and save from herself. Likable, smart, and sassy, I thoroughly loved Davis Way, particularly her numerous faults. The other characters are engaging and the plot is superbly crafted. I literally could not put down this book by the 70 percent mark and have the dark circles under my eyes to prove it.

I found Gretchen Archer by way of Henery Press & I'm so thankful I did! Double Whammy was one of the most entertaining books I've ever read! I read a lot - 2-4 books a week & lots of different genres. This series is a WINNER! It didn't take me long to know I was going to enjoy this book as most of the action takes place in my home state of MS. However, I do live about 3 hours from the Coast setting. I can picture all the places that Archer so vividly describes in her book. Also, her characters are PERFECTLY created & the plot is hysterical. I found myself laughing all throughout the book. Davis Way is the most unassuming Heroine ever! Some of my favorite lines in the book are on page 83 - "even his handwriting looked heartbroken -- said he was out on a deer-in-the-Wilson's-kitchen-again call." It was 2:15 AM & I nearly FELL OFF THE BED LAUGHING when I read that! WE HAVE HAD A DEER IN OUR KITCHEN!! I knew for sure this was a series to love! Davis Way & the many other zany characters keep you entertained from Page 1. The nonstop excitement of the Double Whammy Tournament will keep you wondering what's going to happen next. Archer is masterful in weaving her colorful characters in her fantastic plot! Can't wait to read the next one!

I'm having a hard time rating this one, somewhere between a 3 1/2 and 4 star. What bothered me was the flashbacks and too many extra stories, it got a little overwhelming at times. Also when Davis was in the Pokey, I had a hard time with a few things there, I don't want to say what to avoid spoilers, but I found it a bit too much. Now what I did like was Davis is a jump in there kind of woman. She gets a job in security to figure out slot machines jackpotting too often. She is also sent to other areas to figure out problems (the extra stories that I mentioned). They were interesting and entertaining but a bit much with the main story going on. I will say that this book is non stop, and keeps you guessing to what is going to happen next, because a few things I just didn't see coming. I had quite a few laughs while reading, her father seems to be the most stable character, and I loved George the cab driver. I will continue on with this series and hope that it tones down just a little, to concentrate on the main story, this was a fun read and different from the usual cozies I read.

Davis Way, former police, ex ex wife, Daddy's girl from the small town of Pine Apple where everyone is in everybidy's business and soap opera lives reign. She's offered a job by a Biloxi MS casino and it sounds too good to be true, and you know the old adage..... WHISKEY, TANGO, FOXTROT!! I really liked this book until two thirds of the way through when it felt like a whole other person had started writing it. Why was that? Was Davis needy enough to take whatever cane along? What's with her family....stuff? And then, it kinda feels like they "lived happily ever after"?.....Guess I'll have to see what happens in the second book
