Library Journal - Library JournalGr 7 Up-A well-researched, engaging, and thorough account of the life of one of America's most influential military personnel. Without passing judgment, Fox skillfully portrays the important role that MacArthur played in America's war activity-he was, after all, on active duty in three of the four biggest wars of the century: World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. It details his personal life, the influence his father's military career had on him, and the deep attachment his mother had for him (she followed him to West Point and lived on campus-a fact he seemed neither embarrassed nor burdened by). There are many evocative black-and-white photos taken from various periods of MacArthur's life. The general's characteristic pipe-in-mouth pose appears several times. The book gives a good historical overview of much of America's 20th-century military action and would be a valuable addition.-Randi Hacker, Montgomery Elementary School, VT Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
