From brunch in Bel Air to homeless in Hollywood…

Former actress Meg Barnes used to have it all: tony Beverly Hills address, Amex Black card, Manolos for every day of the month. Not to mention a career as a popular TV detective that made her glittering life possible. But her lifestyle of the rich and famous has turned into a reality show for d-listed starlets. Lost in her Louboutins, she has one man to thank: her con man of a husband.

Handsome FBI agent Jack Mitchell knows a suspect when he sees one — even if she’s as beautiful and gutsy as Meg. Meg’s ex “made off” with half of Hollywood’s wealth in an epic real estate scam. And Jack thinks Meg may have been involved.

Determined to prove her innocence Meg teams up with her quirky, movie-mad best friend to track down her fugitive husband and exact justice. But getting her life, and her career, back on track is harder than auditioning for Spielberg. Especially when her life is threatened. Meg has to trust Jack, the man who may want her behind bars…or as his leading lady for life.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Scott (Dark Passages), best known for her star turn on the TV show Dark Shadows, delivers a unique novel about a Hollywood actress short on cash and down on her luck. Meg Barnes is reduced to reading for a guest part in a pilot after prior success in a popular television series. Her husband, Paul, has disappeared after bilking investors in a scam that bankrupted Meg and left her homeless. She assumes Paul is dead—until a friend mentions seeing him in San Diego, Calif. Gamely, Meg films her pilot during the week and goes on madcap weekend adventures in search of Paul and answers. Mystery and romance are craftily combined as Meg finds a new love interest in Jack, the FBI agent who investigated Paul’s disappearance. Scott gives the reader a first-hand view of the fickle nature of Hollywood in a fast-paced story complete with eccentric characters and a plethora of mysterious twists and turns. (Mar.)
Kirkus Reviews
When Meg Barnes, a Hollywood icon of a certain age, loses everything to her con-man husband, she decides to track him down to get it all back--or at the very least her self-respect, her reputation and maybe even a chance at the love of her life. Not long ago, Meg Barnes had it all. A popular star of a famous mystery series from the past, she lived the high life until the day she received a phone call from Paul, her husband, telling her he'd been kidnapped. After gathering everything of value she can find to get him back, she is devastated when he never returns, then even more tormented when she realizes everything she believed about him was a carefully crafted fantasy. Now, after a year away from Tinseltown, Meg is back for pilot season, older, wiser and ready to figure out what happened to her ex and all the money he scammed in his infamous real estate con. While auditioning, she runs into an old friend who is convinced he saw Paul in San Diego. The hunt is on. Complicating things are Meg's lawyer and friend Sid, who seems to know more than he should; his wife, Carol, who is determined to get Meg back into the Hollywood fold; and Jack Mitchell, the FBI agent who keeps digging into all of their business and who is way too handsome. Meg doesn't know who to trust or where to go, but she'll find loyal allies in unexpected places as she forges a new life for herself from the ashes of her old one. This is the first novel by Scott, who starred in the original Dark Shadows series, and the author's knowledge of the world of Hollywood is evident in the background details throughout the book, offering a fun, sly behind-the-scenes tour of a world most of us know little about. Despite a few weaknesses in the plot and some minor uneven spots in pacing and characterization, the book is an enticing, witty romp; a sparkling Hollywood-set tale that will entertain and satisfy.

Meg Barnes an actress of 'a certain age,' married a con man and lost everything. The FBI thinks Meg was involved in her husband's scam and FBI Agent Jack Mitchell investigates Meg. Meanwhile, Meg sleeps in her car, in neighbor's cars, and showers at the gym, until she meets Donna. This fan-turned-friend takes Meg into her home, allowing Meg to do some investigating into her missing husband's affairs.

This was a great read featuring a desperate woman trying to make her world right again. The subtle humor, and picture-painting descriptions were a joy to read. I hope there is another story to find out what happens with Meg and Jack's relationship, and what eccentric Donna is up to. Nicely done, Ms. Scott, nicely done.

Mystery, comedy & romance in a creative story line

Down and Out in Beverly Heels is an entertaining read with a creative story line. Kathryn Leigh Scott demonstrates her talent for writing with this enjoyable story that combines mystery, comedy and a light touch of romance.

Meg Barnes is an aging actress that finds herself homeless and down on her luck due to her missing second husband, who conned her and many of her friends out of millions of dollars. Meg has to contend with the quirky ways of Hollywood and its penchant for younger actresses, the unpleasantness of having to audition for bit parts after having led a successful career in television, colleagues who believe she knows something about the money they were conned out of, and the task of trying to improve her living situation while solving a mystery.

This book will hold your attention as you follow the trials and tribulations of Meg’s life. Not only is it full of twists and turns that will have you turning the pages, but it also gives the reader insight into the foibles of Hollywood life. Kathryn Leigh Scott lends the story authenticity with her inside knowledge of the industry. Known for her success as a daytime television actress and a publisher, Kathryn adds talented and successful writer to her impressive resume’.

Down and Out in Beverly Heels is a novel with much more depth and intrigue than the description led me to believe. I found it to be a well-crafted and delightful read that kept me interested from the beginning to the end.

In Down And Out In Beverly Heels author Kathryn Leigh Scott util

In Down And Out In Beverly Heels author Kathryn Leigh Scott utilizes her personal experience in the entertainment industry to weave a quirky tale that has a great mix of mystery, comedy and romance.

Set in glitzy Beverly Hills, the story is written in the first person narrative that follows the trials and tribulations of Meg Barnes, a down and out former actress, as she goes on a search to track down Paul, her con man husband, who has disappeared after swindling people in a real estate scam, leaving Meg penniless, homeless and living in her car. FBI agent Jack Mitchell is on the case and thinks that Meg was involved, with the help of her best friend Donna, Meg teams up with Jack on a madcap adventure to find her con man husband, prove her innocence, and maybe even find romance along the way.

This fast-paced mystery story has enough suspense and intriguing twists and turns, flashbacks on Meg's past, comedic humor and a light touch of romance that keeps the reader entertained. Rich in detail of familiar Beverly Hills and Hollywood landmarks, the reader can easily visualize being transported to Tinseltown as they follow Meg on her crazy adventure where murder, mystery, mayhem and mishaps ensue.

With a quirky cast of characters; witty dialogue and interactions; and a crazy madcap mystery adventure featuring a spunky former actress, a hilarious best friend sidekick, and a handsome FBI agent; Down And Out In Beverly Heels is an enjoyable and entertaining summer read.
