Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Voya Reviews
Down Syndrome (DS), a genetic condition that causes mental retardation as well as several potentially serious medical problems, affects 250,000 Americans and millions more worldwide. Since DS was formally identified in the 1860s by Dr. John L. Down, modern research and education have made tremendous strides in improving the quality of life and the lifespan of people born with the disorder. Tocci and Bowman-Kruhm cover similar territory in their books. Bowman-Kruhm's entry in The Need to Know Library is geared toward middle school students, whereas Tocci targets the junior and senior high school grades. They both offer clear, balanced, reassuring, age-appropriate explanations of all aspects of DS, from the myriad health concerns to social, developmental, and behavioral issues. They support their findings and conclusions with summaries of the latest research, treatments, resources, and opportunities now available to those whose lives are touched by DS. Both authors' well-researched texts provide a great service to their reading audiences, dispelling the countless frightening myths often associated with DS while maintaining an attitude of caring acceptance of those who have the disorder. Dozens of positive photographs and uplifting anecdotes support their premise that Down Syndrome is a challenge, not a disaster. These titles are distinguished primarily by reading level, with Tocci's work offering considerably more detail on the research and health implications covered in each book. These highly recommended books would be of great benefit to children with family members, classmates, and neighbors with Down Syndrome. Note: This review was written for two books Everything You Need to Knowabout Down Syndrome and Down Syndrome. Glossary. Index. Photos. Source Notes. Further Reading. VOYA CODES: 3Q 3P J S (Readable without serious defects; Will appeal with pushing; Junior High, defined as grades 7 to 9; Senior High, defined as grades 10 to 12). 2000, Franklin Watts, Ages 13 to 18, 144p, $25. Reviewer: Beth Andersen
School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up-Ten chapters describe Down syndrome, analyze the causes, and give an overview of how this condition will affect people from infancy through adulthood. One chapter, "The Future," includes general information on the Human Genome Project. Throughout, the author emphasizes the uniqueness of children with this condition and their potential for achievement. The text is fairly detailed and most of the writing is clear. However, some vague statements, including "-community organizations have developed various programs" and "The federal government has also become actively involved in addressing issues dealing with individuals with disabilities," may leave readers believing that families receive all the assistance and support they need. This is a thorough, positive approach to the subject. Uninspired black-and-white photos are scattered throughout. Useful for reports and individuals needing up-to-date information on the subject.-Linda Beck, Indian Valley Public Library, Telford, PA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|

    Great Book!

The book Down Syndrome is a very imformative book. It had a lot of history, but a lot of current things also. The title is very vague, and a lot of books are entitled simply 'Down Syndrome'. Tocci does a good job!
