    Like a box of chocolates, or perhaps a photo album.

    Like most fans of Ferrol Sams' writing, I have always been impressed by his economical use of the language, his lack of pretension and "elegance," and his ability to engage his reader in the simplest of stories, and I mean that in a good way...that is, he gets us to *care*.

    In his previous works, especially the trilogy, Sams painted vast tableaux with long unfolding coming-of-age arcs of narrative development, and characters we could follow for years and years. In "Down Town," the mission has changed, and now Sams has instead assembled a set of snapshots into a series of vignettes that do a wonderful job of helping the reader feel pretty well plugged into the small-town semi-rural Georgia milieu where Sams lives and writes (and practices medicine, I think).

    All in all, a charming and delightful book, not at all escapist, but instead light-handedly sharing the author's take on all manner of human foible and folly!

    A reviewer

    I had eagerly awaited perhaps my favorite author's next book for several years. While enjoyable for the colloquial, down-home style, I found the characters not well-developed, and the storyline hard to follow. Maybe I was spoiled to the Horseman trilogy. Worth reading, but don't expect another master work.
