Great book. Brunson doesn't really subscribe to the new school way of playing poker (although there is a lot of overlap). He says stuff like "play your rushes." This is a really great comprehensive guide to different forms of poker. Also, If you are a serious poker player, you will reference this book more and more as the popularity of poker grows and the diversity of games grow.

    Good, but out of date

The book itself is pretty solid. The writing isn't particularly good (though the writing sucks in most poker books), but it is chock full of information that's very helpful to *advanced* players. Beginners should stay away from this book until they read a book that emphasizes the basics. The only problem is that it's out of date. Yeah, the NL Hold'em section is fine. But the draw poker is taught with the jacks or better rule in play and in the stud games presented, there's no low qualifier. The Seven Card Stud section is pretty good, but I would recommend Seven Card Stud for Advanced Players by David Sklansky and Mason Malmuth over that section. Unless you're a completist for this stuff, I would recommend picking up Super System II. The NL Hold'em section is the same. However, there's a newly written Limit Hold'em section, Stud Hi/Lo and the only written information about Triple Draw available in text format. There's also a solid section on Omaha and Omaha Hi/Lo. Any other section is pretty much bells and whistles.

    The Poker Bible?

This book is widely acknowledged as the Poker Bible by players all over the world. Written about 30 years ago, Super System was one of the first books to provide a comprehensive winning strategy for many popular poker games, including the modern day favorite Texas Hold 'Em. I only read the sections on Hold 'Em, and No-Limit Hold 'Em (since that's all I play), along with the introduction, so my review is limited to those portions of the book. I can say that there is a lot of good information in the book, and just about every page had a tidbit that was helpful in some way or another. There are a few annoying things about this book you should know, however. First, the typesetting and layout are so ugly it actually hurt my eyes to read the book. Also, Brunson does a lot of rambling and repeating himself, and he is not a great writer at all. The book looks and reads like it was self-published, and it REALLY could have used an editor's touch. Lastly, Brunson's strategy often comes down to this: 'I would play different cards different ways depending on who I am playing, and what table position I am in.' It's not exactly rock solid advice, although of course you can't blame him because every poker situation is truly unique. I would still recommend this book for two reasons: as I mentioned before, there is a tidbit on just about every page that will help your game, and also you will want to read this book if for no other reason than because your opponents probably have. Hopefully the sequel (due out soon) will be easier to read and will contain new advice.

Don't count your money ..weigh it!!

I just finished reading this book and plan on purchasing the Super System 2. My favorite sections were on the No-Limit Hold 'em... it's such a powerful game compared to Limit hold'em...all the other systems discussed were also great!! This is a great book for someone who already has an understanding of poker and the different varieties of games...but ultimately it's up to you to play the hand. You need to make a move sometime..... Enjoy it!!

    Greatest poker book ever written

This is by far the best, and most complete book on poker ever written. It's hard to believe it was written over 25 years ago! Doyle and his expert accomplices have laid out a manual to success that has changed my game forever. I was good before, now my poker buddies and my online foes are at my mercy! I strongly recommend this book to any serious poker player. The sections on 7 stud, no-limit, and limit poker were especially helpful to me. I am anxiously awaiting Super System II. What could they have possibly left out?

    Awesome!

Fantastic book. Not for beginner's. For that I suggest Play Poker Like the Pros. This book was too complicated when I started playing poker and I didn't give it much credit. I just read it again six months later after lots of playing time and a recent losing streak. I can't believe the difference! As I was reading it again I began to understand the game like never before and couldn't wait to play again. I often completely dominate games now and always play well. WSOP?

    Become a big winner

Before I purchased this book, I considered myself to be a solid poker player who won about 60% of the time. After a bad streak (I lost 7 out of 9 times), I purchased this book. I have now won 14 out of 15 times. Winning comes naturally. The strategies in the book are great. The seven-card stud and hold-em sections are the best. I would like to see a section on Omaha and five card stud though. The book makes you a much more confident player.

    The Essential Poker Book

I'd like to tell you not to buy this book. Why? Because every other person who picks up this book is another thorn in my side when I play. So I'll just cross my fingers we don't find ourselves across the table from each other... This is a must have book for any serious player. Not for the timid, home-game only, 'I learned from watching the Travel Channel', player. Its a big, long book with a lot to learn, but its worth it and then some. If you are a new player I STRONGLY recommend reading a basics book first, Super System isn't something you want to get into until you are generally comfortable with the game, and maybe some real table experience too. A great book is the low-limit hold'em book by Bill Burton. He's a nice guy, wrote a GREAT intro book, and is accessible to his readers... go to his website www.billburton.com. I emailed him a couple years ago after I read the book, and we've corresponded several times since then. Good luck!

The Man, The Myth, The Legend

This book is truly the omnibus of all poker knowledge, albeit circa the 1970's. My father gave his signed 1st ed. of this book for my college graduation, and Doyle sure has made my standard of living while in medical school. It must be said, however, that many of the topics in this book must be taken with a grain of salt. Super System was written in an era where big bets would often lead to big wins. For those of you that have come to know and love Rounders, the WPT, and WSOP, Johnny Chan's methods of check-raising and trapping have ushered in a new style of play that can successfully combat the Brunson system. Just remember to take Brunson's own advice: 'Take a little bit of my knowledge, a little of your own, and a what you learn other places. Trying to play my system just like me will only result in your failure. Instead, make sure that you invent your own style of play that you know and are comfortable with; and boy how those chips will start to come in.'

    TWO THUMBS WAY UP!

I couldnt put this book down once I started reading it! After the first couple chapters I realized you cant just 'read' this book. You have to analyze, understand, and study it. If you are really interested in truly grasping the concepts that are written about in this book you need two things; a highlighter and a notebook. This works perfect because before I go put my chips on the table I review the important points I took notes on. Also by writing it down after you read it and highlighted the important points it helps to engrave it into your memory. The first game I played after reading Super System was very profitable. If you stick to exactly what the book says you will win, but as soon as you play differantly you start to lose. Not a book for a casual card player... but for those of you who want to win, you can win with this book. THE BIBLE OF POKER! AND BY THE WAY- If you read this book you are going to be ahead of 90% of the players out there. 30 years of poker experience can be yours in 30 days with this book.

Essential readidng for the serious Hold'em player

Valuable for anyone, from the beginner to the expert. Your appreciation for this book will grow proportionaly to your understanding of poker in general. For the novice, Sklansky's 'Theory of Poker' is recommended first. Then, this should be your operating manual for any Hold'em table. For Hold'em , the intro section, and both courses on Limit and No-Limit are paramount. The other chapters on other games are interesting and reinforce the 'aggressive' philosophy in general, but most readers are likely to be reading this for Hold'em, the absolute 'real' poker game.

I started playing Hold-em 1 month ago with friends. Last weekend I won a small tourney, the first I ever entered for Hold-em. The book is great all around, but golden for Hold-em.

    Great Hold Em Tips

This book covers many different poker games in great detail. I have only owned this book for a few days and have read the Hold Em sections three times. I haven't read much of the other games, but I am sure the material is just as indept. In the Hold Em sections nearly every aspect of the game is covered and relayed in easy to understand fashion. These tips should help you build a nice roll fast. This is Truly...THE POKER BIBLE. Although this book is written very well, I would suggest that the reader have a general knowledge about the games in the book. Some of the material may be a little tough for beginners to understand and appreciate.
