Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Dr. Atkins has given his hugely popular diet plan a makeover, complete with new recipes, updated scientific information, and a more integrative approach to weight loss and total health. With the medical community beginning to recognize the validity of the Atkins approach -- which maintains that excessive carbohydrates, not fat, are the real culprits in weight gain -- there has never been a better time to check out the diet revolution pioneered by the author whose other bestsellers include Dr. Atkins’ New Carbohydrate Gram Counter and Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Cookbook.
Library Journal
Atkins updates his 20-year-old best seller, Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution with a holistic approach to health and well-being. He repeats his controversial, questionably valid premise that the elimination of carbohydrates from the diet will result in weight loss, good health, and euphoria. Contrary to current thinking, Atkins promotes a diet of protein and fat in four stages: induction, ongoing weight loss, pre-maintenance, and maintenance. Case histories document his achievements. However, his verbose text, bloated by rhetoric and generalizations, may overwhelm lay readers, who may not be able to distinguish between fact and speculation. Useful appendixes include menus, recipes, and a carbohydrate gram counter..-- Marilyn Rosenthal, Nassau Community College Library, Garden City, NY
Kirkus Reviews
"Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution", published two decades ago, sold millions of copies but was denounced by medical authorities for its unsound high-calorie, low-carbohydrate regimen. Now it's back, slightly modified, and billed even more contrariwise as a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet. Atkins blames carbohydrates for most cases of overweight—as well as for much fatigue, mental fog, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. A high-fat diet, he says, is harmful only when added to a high- carbohydrate diet. At times, he backs off and hedges, admitting, for example, that refined flour and sugar, not all carbohydrates, are the culprits, and even that the desserts he promotes should be limited to special occasions. Still, heavy cream, butter, and cheese abound in his recipes; bacon and eggs are on his daily breakfast menu; and his program, especially the 14-day "induction diet" designed to induce ketosis, or fat-burning, turns all prevailing guidelines upside down. It will be interesting to see how this book does now that low-fat, high-carbohydrate eating has been so widely accepted by professionals and public alike. Atkins claims success with his 25,000 overweight patients (who take an average of 30 nutritional pills a day along with the diet), and he scores a point or two against pro-establishment preconceptions among researchers, but he certainly doesn't prove that his is the healthier diet. Still, get ready for a blitz.

Read an Excerpt

Preface to the New Edition

I've never heard of an author redoing his book when it is still a number one bestseller, but this book has been a success for seven years, and some updating is in order. So much has happened since this book was written that I feel I must keep you abreast of how important these changes will prove to be, not only for your weight control project, but also for expanding your health and lifespan.

No, my diet recommendations are not different, although I'll be telling you about some very delicious special foods and some plateau-breaking vita-nutrients created exclusively for Atkins dieters. What has changed dramatically is the world in which the New Diet Revolution plays such a significant role.

When I first wrote this book, I had to convince an entire nation of people who, for a generation, have been systematically brainwashed into believing fallacious ideas about overweight. The unchallenged dogma was that carbohydrates are necessary for everyone, that white flour is good for you, that fats and protein undermine your health, that weight loss requires strenuous exercise or going hungry, and that appetite suppressants may be necessary.

But because the New Diet Revolution works so well, producing essentially automatic weight loss with little regard to quantities, millions of people learned, almost exclusively by word of mouth, that a diet directly opposed to what they have been taught would easily bring their weight problem under control. And they also learned that those who defied the prevailing dogma would improve their energy levels and lab values and would often overcome many medication-requiring illnesses. That is why this book has sold more copies each succeeding year of the six-year span it has been in print. In that time, more than 2 out of every 100 adults in America has obtained a copy of this book, and more have read it. All of these readers have been forced to consider the possibility that one person may be right and the rest of the world wrong. This serious accusation is not made from arrogance, but rather of deep concern that the errors of the "rest of the world" are so widespread as to threaten your health in many ways unless I can help you understand how and why you are being used to further certain economic interests.

You have been repeatedly told that meat, eggs, butter and cream are bad for you and that pasta, cereals, bread, low-fat milk, flavored yogurt, high carbohydrate energy drinks and the like are good for you. Scientific research points in the other direction, but economics explain the discrepancy. The maligned foods, curiously enough, are all those that bring minimal profits to the food industry, and the approved foods, all of which are built upon the least expensive raw materials, are the ones the industry finds most profitable. Although scores of scientific papers have been published showing that what we are taught cannot be true, the utterances from medical associations, the government, and the media never change. Once that sinks in, you may be more receptive to sharing my suspicions that you have been victimized.

In the updated version of New Diet Revolution, I have written three new chapters. One deals with recent scientific developments that may clarify the controversy over which diet is really best for you. Another deals with questions I am asked most frequently by my readers, and the third deals with the rather preposterous misconceptions that I have seen in print about the program.

In addition, since my colleagues and I at the Atkins Center have expanded our services to our readers, I have updated many chapters to integrate information about how you may interact with us to facilitate your weight loss, health restoration and dietary enjoyment.

Also, throughout the book, I have updated information when appropriate. And finally, I am aware that this very book has profoundly changed people's attitudes toward dieting and this edition recognizes the different mindset that people now have -- namely, the expectation of success. This optimism, based on the success of people like you have seen, should, I am confident, serve to be a wonderfully selffulfilling prophesy.

    This diet works for me

It's a true loss that Dr Atkins died. I lived on a low-fat, high-carb diet for 10 years & every one of those years were miserable. I gave Atkins diet a try because there was nothing left to try but this. I am a big carb craver, so eliminating them out of my lifestyle is not always easy or enjoyable, but after getting into ketosis the motivation to keep the increased energy & fat loss results keeps me going. It just takes more planning & discipline to eat this way than the usual haphazard junk food diet that got me depleted & sick in the first place. Not eating enough protein & good fats is a big no-no. I have done this diet before & it has made me healthier than I ever was in my life. My bodyfat percentage with diligent adherence to the diet & regular exercise dropped from 26% to 17% in 8 months. But after 5 years I got lazy & started eating a lot of sweets & carbs for 3-4 yrs & now I'm back at square one. My bodyfat percentage skyrocketed to 31%. Very unhealthy. Atkins is the only solution that I know works for me, & the best things I love about this diet/lifestyle are the energy it provides & the fact that I never have to feel hungry ever.

    I Also Recommend:

If you're considering low carb, this is the book to read!

This book is essential reading before switching to a low carb diet. This book will help you to understand the reason low carb works AND is good for you! It will keep you from the mistake of eating highly processed low-carb marketed foods instead of healthy natural foods!Once you understand, then move on to good low carb cookbooks to learn to cook this way so you don't get bored with steak, steak, chicken only!

It will work... ONLY IF YOU SERIOUSLY FOLLOW IT!!

To all those who failed on Atkins, it's hard to believe anyone could fail by eating this way. COUNT CARBS, NOT FAT! Why do you think over 1/2 of America is overweight??!!! All those 'low-fat' items are LOADED WITH SUGAR! Yes, I'll agree the first 2 weeks are a rough, but once you get past it, you'll be fine. Just gradually add 10gms of carbs per day in weekly increments. The reason some people cannot handle this is they are SO DEPENDENT on sugars and starches, going into a state of Ketosis is a shock to the body. Heck, stop smoking or drinking coffee and I'm sure you'll feel just as bad. Anyways, I went from 185#'s to 160#'s in 8 weeks, and subsequently lost another 15#'s. ALL THIS WITHOUT STEPPING INTO THE GYM ONCE! So here I am, almost 3 years later, 40 pounds lighter, 3 waist sizes less, less sluggish, more happy than ever. Not bad for a 32 year old! It's not really a diet; it's a lifestyle. Sure, I'll go off every now and then (like I did at the buffets in Vegas last weekend) but my metabolism is so fine tuned that it didn't effect my weight one bit. There's no excuse for anyone failing this. And if they do, it's probably because they're not following the guidelines and/or using the 'just a little bit wont hurt' mentality towards carb-ridden foods. Just eat eggs, cheese, steaks, chicken, shrimp, salads, etc... And if you need sweets, there are plenty of sites that sell pretty darn good low carb baked goods and candies. Just try to avoid Malitol (a sugar alcohol that some candies have that bloats you big time).

    A reviewer

For the Record, Atkins is not a 'poisonous diet'. It's not even a diet! It's a way of life, an alteration of the way you consume food, and the way you think about it, and I perceive it as shameful the way America has fallen into the harmful clutches of ignorant 'specialists' who are destroying our nation. Atkins puts you into a stage called 'ketosis', which is not the building up of 'harmful toxins' in your body it is the RELEASE of them! And to all you fat-phobics out there, it is YOUR 'diet' that has caused America to sacrifice tit¿s citizens, for us all to 'look good'. Sure, you can loose weight by starving yourself, but why do it, when you can eat well and FEEL GOOD?! Why feel weak and deprived, when you can feel full and energetic. I myself lost 40 lbs. on this wonderful way of life. People, I ask you to open your minds to a new path, one to good health, well being, and satisfaction. Forget the low-calorie lies imprinted in your minds, erase all talk of fat declared dangerous, and embrace the food one of the most knowledgeable medical prodigies this century has seen has proven as beneficial to your body. Please give this healthy lifestyle a chance!

Why my initial weight loss success vanished

I lost 35 pounds on this diet two years ago, the problem was I couldn't keep it off because I never learned a darn thing from the book except cut out the carbs and eat meats. If you can do that forever than Atkins is for you. If you can't, do yourself a favor and learn as I did by reading another book written by a Registered Dietitian 'Formerly Fat, Forever Fijian Lean' I have lost a total of 40 pounds over the last three months and I have a better diet, more energy 'I even run now'and a better sex life! My MD say's my glucose and A1C are perfect and finally I am off Lopid.Funny thing is when I was in the hospital for my diabetes the dietitan that 'educated' me was fat herself so I don't put alot of faith in RD's but this guy has different ideas and is in shape. He even recommends alcohol as a fat loss aid. My MD said as long as the weight comes off and the labs look good and I don't drink to excess it's fine.

    Read the ENTIRE book...

before judging! The inductions phase CAN be high fat, but it doesn't have to be. This plan helped me to lose 62 pounds, give up stress and emotional eating, and get pregnant. Have you ever downed an entire bag of Doritos and still felt hungry? Have you eaten an entire 1/2 gallon of ice cream and gone back for more? I'm not saying that this diet is for everyone -- I just love those people who complain about losing 10 pounds! I'm just saying that my total cholestoral was 224. I weighed 201 pounds at the age of 29. I was only 5'4'' tall, for heaven's sake! I was taking medication for high blood pressure. I was infertile and taking medicine for insulin resistance. After reading the book twice (yes, I was a hard sell), and following the plan for 9 months, I lost 63 pounds and was FINALLY able to get pregnant. I have a beautiful, healthy 22 month old little girl, my cholestoral is down to 162, and I lost all of the baby weight after breast feeding. This plan has literally changed my life. I actually feel full after a meal, and my cravings are gone. I must admit that the first week was tough, but there is so much support out there if you need it. After the first week, things just became a routine. I have now included some research into lower or 'better' fat choices (i.e. Hampton's and South Beach), but we'll just have to see the results in a few months. Good luck in what ever weight management system you choose!

I'll be damned, it actually worked !

I didn't think I really needed a diet, but many of my friends were dropping the pounds, so I gave it a try. 5 weeks later and 20 pounds lighter, I have to say it works if you can avoid 'cheating'. 6 months later, I have been able to keep the weight off without even staying on the maintenance diet, just some modified carbo intake. I don't think I could stay on this diet long-term due to the restrictions on fruits and vegetables, but it was great for getting me back under 200 pounds. I would recommend it to anyone as it seems better than starving yourself thin. This book was easy to read with plenty of recipes and charts.

    A Work in Progress

First, a comment on the writing itself. I know the writing is sometimes burdensome. I would have liked to see more charts regarding the research as quoted. I would also liked to have a bit more information regarding how to access the primary research information, perhaps in a more detailed bibliography. Now, regarding the diet itself: it works for me but hasn't worked (weight loss) for my wife. I am 51 year old male weighing 277.5 at onset of diet. Elevated BP unless on med, blood sugar at 185 to 220 unless on meds. My approach has been take a battery of blood tests initially - one called an Executive Profile or Panel. This has given me a baseline. I'll test again at one month, three months, six months, and one year. Initially, here are the interim results. I take no more hypertension or diabetes meds. BP after two weeks is 142/84 (I want to watch this carefully) and blood sugar is averaging 90. This is impressive for someone on two diabetes (Type II) meds twice a day and one BP med. I do occasionally cheat and this brings me out of ketosis. One day back on induction and I'm losing again. Lost 9.5 pounds in 2 weeks and still going. I'll write a review as I do the followup labs. One comment regarding another reviewer - The China Report regarding cancer from high meat issues may have nothing to do with the protein and everything to do with steroids in the meat. This certainly bears investigation. One other thing about energy: no fatigue, lots of energy and no hunger.

    So far we know this....

Several good studies came out last year that showed that this kind of diet prescribed in the book will cause you to lose weight faster that a regular old low calorie diet the first six months you're on it. However after one year, it makes no difference whether you do Atkins or a regular low calorie diet- the results are the same. On this basis, I recommend this book's diet in the short run, but not as one to stay on for life.

ATKIN'S WORKS AND KEEPS ON WORKING!!!

The Atkins diet has changed my life! I've lost over 20+ pounds so far. I have much more energy, go-gettiveness, and I'm much more happy! A diet that that lets you eat all you love to eat, at reasonable quantities (of course). Also, some people are vehimetly oppossed to this diet, saying it causes high blood preassure, and high cholestorol. NO IT DOESN'T!! I just had my regularly scheduled doctors appointment and my blood preasure and cholestorol are as low as they have ever been in my life. You, also, do not just loose 'water wheight' you shed actuall fat pounds. My one friend (the one that introduced me to Atkins) has lost over 150 pounds. No one has that much water wheight! Do they? I think not. He's also experienced a big change in his life, he is more happy, energy filled, and you name it. I do caution however not to jump right in and cut carbs all together. You have to whene yourself off to a maxium number a day. Once you reach that number don't eat anymore carbs until the next day. In closing, pick up the book! At least read it, it may change your life.

    The Atkin's diet is poison!!

The Atkin's diet promotes Ketosis- which is not 'fat burning' it the buildup of toxic chemicals called ketones in the body due to kidney abuse. Your kidneys are damaged by use of this diet and for those who say their cholesterol levels did not increase are in the minority. if you want to lose weight, switch to a diet based on whole foods- grains and whole fruits and vegetables. Do your research- the atkins diet is destroying bodies for the sake of looking good.

Approach worked great for me and people I know

I used the information in this book to lose weight and so have many other people I know. The weight loss is faster than other low calorie diets and also it seems like it is more fat lost first. Great recommendation for a diet book.

    It really works.

My sister and her husband have been on the Atkins diet now for over a week. This is the first time I have known my sister to have any energy in many years. I am fortunate not to have to diet but I have decided to go on it because I seem to have no energy. Before starting any diet you should always consult with your doctor. I highly recommend Dr. Atkins and checking with your doctor first.

    Low Carb Diets

HI----I tryed the diet a year ago, my husband and I, got the tapes, read the book, etc, and the weight just melted off my husband but not me. I just got tired and the weight didn't budge!! I was doing the diet wrong, so that was my fault. I don't like water, I love pop, Pepsi. This time, I gave up the Pepsi, for those who drink any with caffiene be prepared for the withdraws...this time I found some bottled water that is flavored that has no caffiene, low sodium, no calories and no carbs. Really drink at least 8-8oz. glasses of water, if not you will be tired and that is where the kidney damage comes in, the keytones need to be flushed out of the kidneys with water, not just fluids!! I started the diet almost 3 full days ago and lost 4 pounds. I am so happy. It really works, if you follow it and as long you make it your diet for life. The maintenence isn't that bad, you can have some carbs and you can have low carbs for all but one day or two days a week that you carb up and then do induction for 48 hours and maintence after that. But if you go completely off it everything you worked so hard to lose, starts to come back and it comes back at least as fast as it took to lose it!!!

People With Failing Kidneys Take Note

The 'Atkins' (low-carb & high protein) diet has proven successful in helping people shed pounds, in many instances - at least on a short-term basis. In this, and other Atkins diet publications, the author strongly cautions that this weight-loss protocol is NOT meant to be used by those with significant kidney failure. Unfortunately, with an estimated 20 million Americans (2003 database) currently experiencing some form of chronic kidney disease (CKD), and record numbers of people (>90,000 in 2001) told, each year, that they have End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) and must begin dialysis to stay alive, the likelihood that someone, who shouldn¿t be following the Atkins `plan¿, is, is overwhelmingly high. From the kidney¿s perspective, the problem with an Atkins diet is multi-fold ¿ a high meat diet = (a) excess protein stress, (b) mineral overload (especially phosphorus and potassium), and (c) excess creatine (a Bio-fuel) which will be converted to creatinine (Bio-waste). Excess protein will always be problematic, but there is an effective way to deal with excess phosphorus, potassium, and creatine/creatinine encountered by following this diet. The proven procedures for mineral removal (Demineralization) can be found in ¿Healthy Living With Demineralization¿ and ¿More Bio-fuel ¿ Less Bio-waste¿.

    Sugar addicts read this!

This book has convinced me that low carb eating is the way to go. My husband had 50lbs to lose and I only 25, but he dropped 30lbs in only 6 weeks! We feel SO much better, have NO cravings for what used to be our favorite foods and have discovered a new product line of ZERO-CARB-ZERO-SUGAR flavored syrups that really make this program easy. They are called DaVinci Gourmet syrups, and they have over 44 flavors! Check them out at www.davincigourmet.com. I use them in coffee, add them to my low-carb shakes, ice cream recipes, anything that needs a boost.
