Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
One of the most palatable weight-loss diets ever devised allows the reader to lose weight with a minimum of pain and keep it off with ease. Drawing on 18 years of experience and analysis, Dr. Atkins has refined and expanded his thinking about weight loss, though his diet remains based on low-carbohydrate intake.
Library Journal
Atkins updates his 20-year-old best seller, Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution with a holistic approach to health and well-being. He repeats his controversial, questionably valid premise that the elimination of carbohydrates from the diet will result in weight loss, good health, and euphoria. Contrary to current thinking, Atkins promotes a diet of protein and fat in four stages: induction, ongoing weight loss, pre-maintenance, and maintenance. Case histories document his achievements. However, his verbose text, bloated by rhetoric and generalizations, may overwhelm lay readers, who may not be able to distinguish between fact and speculation. Useful appendixes include menus, recipes, and a carbohydrate gram counter..-- Marilyn Rosenthal, Nassau Community College Library, Garden City, NY

Kirkus Reviews
Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution, published two decades ago, sold millions of copies but was denounced by medical authorities for its unsound high-calorie, low-carbohydrate regimen. Now it's back, slightly modified, and billed even more contrariwise as a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet. Atkins blames carbohydrates for most cases of overweight—as well as for much fatigue, mental fog, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. A high-fat diet, he says, is harmful only when added to a high-carbohydrate diet. At times, he backs off and hedges, admitting, for example, that refined flour and sugar, not all carbohydrates, are the culprits, and even that the desserts he promotes should be limited to special occasions.

Still, heavy cream, butter, and cheese abound in his recipes; bacon and eggs are on his daily breakfast menu; and his program, especially the 14-day 'induction diet' designed to induce ketosis, or fat-burning, turns all prevailing guidelines upside down. It will be interesting to see how this book does now that low-fat, high-carbohydrate eating has been so widely accepted by professionals and public alike. Atkins claims success with his 25,000 overweight patients (who take an average of 30 nutritional pills a day along with the diet), and he scores a point or two against pro-establishment preconceptions among researchers, but he certainly doesn't prove that his is the healthier diet.

Read an Excerpt

Preface

In the four years since the hardcover edition of this book was published, there have been several developments that just might help make the rest of your life a lot more pleasant.

It wouldn't surprise me if your goal of being really slim is beginning to look like an impossible dream; and perhaps you are ready to give up trying. If so, you're not alone; the same thing has been happening to the majority of the population, and all in the last few years.

There have always been a considerable number of over weight Americans; one in four were significantly so. For generations, that 25% represented a constant, predictable measure of our obesity problem. But ten years ago, an epidemic started and spread across America like a brushfire. Every year, some two million new cases developed. When last quantified, the decade's damage was officially measured to be an increase of 32% in the number of Americans who were obese (20% or more above their ideal weight).

If you are one of this growing number of weight gainers, it may be that you have been following the wrong diet— the diet that created the epidemic. As the only physician who has steadfastly opposed the universal application of the high carbohydrate, 30% fat diet, I can state with authority that the obesity epidemic is in- fact caused by those very instructions and by that very diet.

Think of it: the "solution'' is really the problem.

Using simplistic reasoning, it would seem that reducing fat in our diet would reduce fat in our bodies. The adage ''Lose weight, stay on a low-fat diet" has been repeated so often that most of us assume it is scientifically proved But as you will learn in this book, science ''proves"some thing quite the opposite. There is proof that obesity is due to a very specific metabolic defect. And once you have the key, a key that seems to elude even our health care policy makers, you will be able to excise obesity with the precision of a skilled surgeon who dissects away a tumor while leaving the healthy tissue intact.

Armed with this knowledge, the project of losing weight will be transformed from a hunger- and fatigue-provoking ordeal that only a handful of us can endure for life, to a surprisingly easy matter of eating abundantly, luxuriously and healthfully, yet always selectively and wisely.

Our physical urges are hard to combat. Fighting the scale armed only with willpower and determination works, at best, for only five low-fat dieters out of a hundred. But we might instead use our intellect, in the manner this book will show you, and bypass our need to rely on willpower.

Learn to unlock the secret of easy weight loss and you'll be able to lose while eating second and third helpings of traditional main courses.

Once you learn of the caloric richness and satiety that the eating program within these pages provides, its impact should hit you like a sledgehammer. "This is not dieting," you will feel, ''this is a banquet." And as weight loss and improved well-being take place, you will feel exhilaration, relief and confidence that getting and staying slim will be a breeze and that the end of your weight problem is clearly in view.

    Life Is Good

My wife and I started doing Atkins ten weeks ago. She has lost 12 and I ten pounds. But that is not the issure with us. We have new energy, are not hungry anymore, and our body chemisty is near perfect, as our doctors tell us, BMIs of 22, flat stomachs. So, high carbo intake is the cause of this nation's overweight problems, not high-fat. Bravo for Dr. Atkins for bucking the AMA and FDA for all these years.

Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution: The Amazing No-Hunger Weight-Loss Plan That Has Helped Millions Lose Weight and Keep It Off

Although, I have not read any of Dr. Atkin's publications, his diet was recommended to me. I got some details on how the diet works and how to monitor my carbohydrates intake from some one who is following his program (of course, this instruction was given in a grocery store) about a month ago. Since that conversation, I have watched my eating habits, almost cut out sugar and white food and the most amazing thing is that I have lost 25 pounds. I am sure if I would follow his instructions I would lose more. However, I am please with the rate I am losing weight and the remarks I have gotten from my family and friends.

The Critics Should Try It Themselves

It's amazing to me that people can sit up and say how questionable something is and not even try it themselves first. If they'd try it, they'd see that it does work!!!

    Questionable

A seemingly effective diet, but I am loath to follow health advice from a man whose book is laden with grammatical errors. I will follow a similar plan by another author.

    I've lost 58 lbs, Hubby lost 80.

We tried counting calories and fat, but we gained weight, AND was hungry all the time. We started the 'Diet' on January 17, 2000, and we bothed weighed 255 lbs. Hubby reached his goal of 175 in July, but he does fluctuate between 175 and 178. I still have 42 lbs to go. Hubby eats more carbs now, and it is harder for me to stick to less carbs when I am fixing the meals. I am still losing, but at a much slower rate than I was before. I want to lose the 42 lbs by Christmas, but may not get it done. But ... I am going to keep at it till I reach my goal of 150 lbs. I am 47, and this is the first time I have dieted without starving. Thank you, Dr. Atkins, from Vicki and John.

    ***Jennifer-a carb addict from Delaware***

All of my life I've been 'pleasantly plump'. Only once, about seven years ago was I able to get down to 125 lbs. I did it with exercise and starvation (not very intelligent, I abmit, but it worked-for about a year). Since then, I've been struggling with low fat diets, phentermine pills and meridia from the doctor-NOTHING WORKS. I remember giving a list of what I ate to my doctor and saying WHY CAN'T I LOSE WEIGHT, WHAT I'M EATING IS NOT BAD. What I didn't realize was that I was a Carb. Addict. My parents introduced me to the 'Atkins Diet'. When they first told me I was impressed that my parents, who had always been overweight had decided to make a change in their lifes, but truly expected no results(I had a poor attitude towards diets at this point). After only four months of dieting, my father had lost approx. 42 llbs. and my mother approx. 35--I WAS IN SHOCK! We went to our family reunion in June of this year and after one whole week of humiliation on the beach in my bathing suit, I decided THIS IS IT, I'm gonna do this! Well, its been six weeks today and I've lost 20 llbs. I have 45 more to go, but I feel great. The reason I took the time to write this is so that anyone who's been in my place can understand, this is not bottemless pit of despair(being fat). There is a solution. After the first 2 weeks of getting used to what you can and cannot eat, it gets much easier. Make sure to read the book and educate yourself on what you should be eating and what you should be doing. GNC has a multi-vitamin made special for a high protein, low carb. diet(Atkins)-that's what I take. Thanks for listening guys and good luck!!!

I lost 70 lbs on this diet and have kept it off over 2 years

I followed the diet exactly as explained in the book. It worked for me! It took about 1 year to drop the 70 lbs. I plan to continue the program forever. I eat 3 meals a day plus snacks. I never deny myself any food. I just make sure it's 'worth the calories'. I weigh myself daily and if there is a gain I immediately eat according to induction phase 1 and take off the extra pounds ASAP. I do yoga daily. Walk or do low impact aerobics each day for 1/2 hour.

14 days and 20 lbs later

I was 235 lbs. 2 weeks ago. I now weigh 215. Can you imagine what a difference that could make in your life? And, so quickly. I don't think you will have a heart attack or get cancer eating a low carb diet for two weeks. But, I do think you will enjoy it and keep eating this way. I still have 20 lbs. to go. No cravings for chips or baked goods! Appetite is suppressed between meals. Energy is up and Irritable bowel is gone. And I seem to be able to eat cheeses and creams for the first time in my life without distressing my stomach. Was it the sugar and refined flour all this time? I really don't expect to eat junk food ever again. The critics, and they are out there, must have alot of stock in the sugar and flour industry. I don't get it? I am eating the same amount of protein I always eat with the exception of breakfast which I did not eat much of before. Now I eat some ham, sausage, bacon and eggs. Otherwise my protein intake is the same. Don't most people have Beef, Poultry, Fish, Pork for Lunch and Dinner? I did and still do. I cut out the chips, pasta, and potato for lunch and dinner. Big Whoop! I have salad, low carb veggies and even occasional almonds, peanuts, macadamia nuts during my induction. I'll be able to add more vegetables, fruits and occasional pasta or potato when I reach my ideal weight in about 30 days or sooner. However, I will never return to the sugar and refined flour addictive junk. Thanks to sugar and refined flower supporters and critics of Dr. Atkins you are going to get GRIEF from family and Friends. Oh, I hear that¿s bad for you! Make sure you read the book so you feel confident with your decision. Don't take their attacks personally. Acknowledge what they have heard about the diet and encourage them to read the book and decide for themselves. Be amused by their ignorance. I'm sure the book will be enlightening for them! I just bought the book for my brother in law who heard criticism from his wife, but both were intrigued. PREGO HAS 23 GRAMS OF SUGAR IN THEIR SPAGETTI SAUCE!! What is up with that! You can get sauce with as little as 3 grams of sugar and it tastes very good. You don't think the sugar industry is trying to hook you like the tobacco industry did the smokers? One has to wonder? SUGAR, What is it good for. Uh, Absolutely nothing! Cavities, diabetes, Heart disease, overweight,............

I will never go hungry again.....

6 months ago I decided I would try eating to live instead of living to eat. How could I make food a non-issue? This book taught me how. It has been utterly amazing, to myself and others alike. As of today, I have lost 30 pounds and as funny as this sounds, I do not want to lose anymore. Im where I want to be for the first time in my life. I do not diet, starve or think about my next meal. I am living.....comfortably. BTW, I have one piece of chocolate everyday and do eat carbs! I just learned how and how much.....it has literally changed and effected my whole life. Time for dinner!

    THIS REALLY DOES WORK

I started the new year weighing 196 lbs. and was exploding out of my size 34' pants. I resolved to lose 20 pounds and set 175 lbs as my goal. I chose this diet and bought this book. I have followed the diet religiously for the past 3 months. Today I weigh 162 lbs. and fit nicely in my old size 32' pants. I easily exceeded my goal. I haven't been this slim since I was 25 years old, and I'm 30. I had a strip steak, grilled shrimp, & a big salad with blue cheese dressing last night for dinner. Delicious. Talk about pleasure vs. pain...! I can honestly say I've never been hungry. Cravings yes, hunger no...! But I'm astonished with the results. It's fantastic.
