    Biblical Principles & Practices Dr. Bob gave A.A.

    Here was the book our world-wide history fellowship members and I had been waiting for. It is the first of four that authors Dick B. and Ken B. are preparing on A.A. cofounder Dr. Bob Smith. This book reviews in detail what Dr. Bob meant when he said he had gone to church three times on Sundays, often to prayer meetings on Wednesdays, and to his church's Christian Endeavor meetings on Monday. He also said he had received excellent training in the Bible as a youngster. And all of this went on during Dr. Bob's days growing up in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. The whole community, including Bob's own family, was alive with conversions, Bible studies, prayer meetings, and evangelism. And Dr. Bob learned from the sources--his own family and its deep involvement in North Congregational Church, the church services, the Sunday school, the prayer meetings, the YMCA lectures, the St. Johnsbury Academy religious emphasis on daily chapel, required church attendance, and required Bible study each week. The author has laid out all these A.A. Biblical roots in this remarkable book. As always, he has peppered it with footnotes and bibliographic references--over 600 footnotes. It showed me where the simple Akron A.A. ideas of conversion, reliance on the Creator, old fashioned prayer meetings, Bible study, Quiet Times, and witnessing really got their oomph. It came from Dr. Bob's youth--as detailed here.
