Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Danielle Williams
Hip-hop has always gotten negative publicity because of the violence that tends to permeate its lyrics. But the violence and swearing are only a reflection of what the artists know, most having grown up in dangerous environments and anxious to escape their circumstances the best way they know how. Dr. Dre is one of the artists responsible for explaining and promoting hip-hop beyond its gangsta reputation and enlightening the general populace to the true nature of hip-hop. A star in his own right, Dr. Dre has been responsible for the discovery and promotion of a half dozen hip-hop superstars and the creation and promotion of at least two record labels. Despite his desire to stay out of trouble, Dr. Dre's life is not without controversies. Earl presents Dr. Dre's life in a straightforward manner, focusing on Dr. Dre's professional accomplishments and difficulties with very little personal information provided beyond what impacted his professional life. Filled with images of Dr. Dre throughout his career, the text is dry and reads like a timeline in paragraph form. Fans of Dr. Dre and hip-hop will appreciate the information and it serves as an adequate introduction to Dr. Dre's professional accomplishments, but anyone looking for a good, personal biography of Dr. Dre should look somewhere else. The text is part of the "Superstars of Hip-Hop" series. Reviewer: Danielle Williams
