Overview

For seven months during 1951-52, announcer Aime Gauvin (as "Dr. Jazz") hosted a weekly half-hour radio show that spotlighted many of the Dixieland groups then performing nightly in New York clubs. Storyville has released quite a few CDs from these previously unissued broadcasts, focusing on individual bands. This sampler has 11 selections not included on the other sets, featuring bands headed by Eddie Condon, Wilbur DeParis, Buck Clayton, Bobby Hackett, Ralph Sutton, Red Allen, Pee Wee Erwin, Hot Lips Page and Jimmy Archey. The music is straightahead Dixieland including two versions of "Sweet Georgia Brown" and Buck Clayton's reworking of "Jingle Bells." With sidemen taken from the who's who of classic jazz, this CD gives one a fine sampler of the early-'50s Dixieland scene.
