Overview

Ace's Dr. John and His New Orleans Congregation isn't a Dr. John compilation in the strictest sense of the term -- in other words, if you're looking for nothing but his funky hippie gumbo, you'd better look elsewhere. This disc is actually a great collection of cuts Mac Rebennack either played on, or produced, during the late '50s, and all of which were released on Ace Records. Only "Storm Warning" is a genuine Rebennack song; the rest are New Orleans R&B at its funkiest. Not all of the songs are classics -- in fact, only a handful, such as Earl King's "Let the Good Times Roll" come close to that status -- but many of them are quite entertaining, especially for hardcore New Orleans R&B fanatics, making this a nice addition to either Dr. John or serious New Orleans R&B collections.
