Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Most people today have some knowledge of Dr. Seuss; his books are popular around the world. The author gives the reader a thorough background on his life and the evolving books that brought him fame. Theodor Seuss Geisel wrote his first book at the age of 33. He continued writing and illustrating and in 1957, he wrote The Cat in the Hat, which is probably his most famous title. This small biography uses actual photos along with a timeline of the author's life to tell his story and aid in comprehension. Many schools and libraries celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday each year and this title would make an excellent addition to that celebration. It includes a glossary, an index, a bibliography of additional books on the subject, and a special code to use the Facthound internet site. This title is part of the "First Biographies" series and would be an appropriate choice for the beginning reader. The author has also just released a biography of Charles M. Schultz of "Peanuts" cartoon fame. 2005, Pebble Books/Capstone Press, Ages 4 to 8.

K-Gr 2-In three chapters, these books cover the subjects' childhoods, their entry into their field of writing and/or illustrating, and a bit about their books. On each spread, a full-page photo faces brief, large-print sentences. A cumulative time line that adds dates to events mentioned in the text runs along the bottom. As readers move forward, each time line becomes more complete. There is enough basic information for early report writers, but not enough for students beyond this age range. Libraries and classrooms in which beginning-reader biographies are in demand might consider these titles.-Kathleen Simonetta, Indian Trails Public Library District, Wheeling, IL Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
