Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Get out of your head and live in your heart, Lenox Hill Hospital cardiologist Steinbaum urges in this chatty “you go girl” guide to getting and staying on the right health track. Steinbaum decries the “heartsickness” that runs rampant in today’s world, putting increasingly younger women at risk for cardiac disease, an ailment that kills more women than all forms of cancer, lung disease, Alzheimer’s, and accidents combined. Mental stress—encompassing anxiety, depression, hostility, and social isolation—is very damaging; essentially, “the heart is suffering from oxygen deprivation every time you” allocate blood to the brain to deal with stress. Steinbaum illuminates the mechanics of heart disease and counsels women on how they can help themselves, from eating healthy and exercising to keeping a detailed “heart book.” While nimbly tackling the technical aspects of heart disease and preventive measures, Steinbaum’s greatest strength is her ability to connect with readers. “When I say, ‘Live from the heart,’ I’m saying ‘Live from that place of who you are,’” she writes. “It’s about really understanding your best qualities and letting them shine.” Her big-sister approach is just what the doctor ordered. Read it and be inspired. Dr Steinbaum's passion for heart health shines through in what is anything but  "just another self-help book."   Her style of drawing on personal experiences makes an often difficult subject, instantly accessible. I am not surprised the tv stations go to her for comment.

I bought this book in preparation for a 2 hour program I was giving on "The Heart in Health and Disease" to a Learning in Retirement group. Since many in the audience would be women, I was interested in reading her approach, knowing that heart disease can present differently in women than in men, and that most studies had been done in men. The author doesn't just discuss preventive measures. She does, however, talk of caring for the heart hopefully long before there is any indication of heart disease. She also educates women (and parenthetically men) on how to prepare for a visit with a physician and how to hold a dialogue with a physician to make the most of the encounter and relationship. The fact that one of the patients mentioned in the book is an internet friend added to my interest and perhaps even made me aware of the book. After reading it, I bought another copy to give as a prize at my presentation and recommended it to my audience. Highly recommended.

There is no other way to say it, I don't like self help books but this one has blown me away. I was moved to tears more than once while reading it. It is surprisingly readable and very instructive. While the doc sometimes gets a little too urgent/alarmist in tone, we are talking about heart health. There is a reason they say something is "as serious as a heart attack". Strongly recommend.
