What ebooks are for: Splendid old adventure novels

For less than a buck you can now have all six Dr. Syn books, which are forgotten by many but enjoy a hardcore fandom. There have been movie versions with George Arliss, Patrick McGoohan, and Peter Cushing as Syn, all worth watching, and who can tell when some good scriptwriter will notice the character again? Dr. Syn starts off as a clergyman. Romantic crises cause his transformation into the dreaded pirate Captain Clegg, and then he returns to his old parish to rest but finds it necessary to lead the local smugglers as the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh. Warning: The books aren't completely consistent with each other. The first book, perhaps the best, tells the end of the story. Then Thorndike (the more common spelling) gave his readers some background in Dr. Syn Returns; and then went the the very beginnings of the character in Dr. Syn on the High Seas. Read them, you'll love them.

    Superb

Atmospheric 18th century England -full of adventure, romance and excitement. Wonderful characters. Read "High Seas" first, then "Return" and end with "Shadow" and "Dr Syn".
