Children's Literature - Heather Kinard
Vlad Dracula was a prince, but not the kind you find in fairy tales. He was the Prince of Wallachia, a region of Romania, during the Middle Ages. He was a strong opponent of the Ottoman Empire, but was more widely known as a cruel and vicious tyrant. Dracula used torture and violence on both his enemies as well as his own people, in order to win and maintain power. His preferred method of torture was impalement, which consisted of thrusting pointed stakes through the bodies of his victims. This was a particularly cruel method of death and Vlad impaled so many people that he earned the nickname, "Vlad the Impaler." Dracula had many enemies, including some members of his own family. After losing and regaining his throne several times, he was finally killed during a battle led by a distant relative who wanted to take over. Dracula died with the same bloody violence that had filled so much of his life. Years after his death, the tales of his terrible ruthlessness inspired the legend of the blood-thirsty vampire known as Count Dracula. This is a narrative of a particularly bloody period of history. The chilling details, photos, and illustrations may be disturbing to some, but will definitely appeal to young horror fans. This book also contains a table of contents, glossary, bibliography, and a brief comparison of Dracula's world then and now. Reviewer: Heather Kinard
