Outstanding piece of fantasy by one of the genres best.

If you're looking for the standard fantasy fare of vapid maidens with heaving bosoms, and heros who can single-handedly outfight the entire troll army with gore encrusted sword and muscles, go look somewhere else, 'cause you won't find it in this splendid book. In the first of his Dragon series, Gordon R. Dickson treats his readers to a story that entertains without white-washing what the real medievil world was probably like; smelly, dirty, violent and dangerous. Along the way you will meet; Our Hero, Jim, a modern scholar (and D-grade magician) who suddenly finds himself in the body of a dragon, and his fiance Angie; the crotchety old AAA+ wizard, Carolinous; a sarcastic English wolf named Aargh; huge, virtually unkillable 'worms'; evil sandmirks; mere dragons and various other characters who populate the world of Dicksons alternate England. To tell you more would ruin the wonderful surprises in store. Ah.... I wish I was reading The Dragon and The George again for the first time.

A fun reversal on traditional theme

Usually you hear/read of St. George and the Dragon. This book is a reversal of that theme with very entertaining results. The characters are interesting and human dealing with unusual problems one rarely considers. The story line and characters keep the reader drawn into the story clear to the last sentence. A great summer, winter or any season, read. Enjoy!

This fanstasy by Gordon Dickson is great writing and an easy read. It is also the first in a series with the same setting.

    more from this reviewer

    Better than my childhood movies

For those who don't know, this is the book with the story that inspired much of the plot in the animated film "The Flight of Dragons." If you liked that movie, you'll love this book much, much more. It's similar enough to the story to remind you of events there, but different enough to keep you guessing what's happening next. It's utterly delightful.

For anyone who believes anything can come true

One of the best books I have read! It goes to show there is no condition that love cannot overcome, whether it be this world, or of the Dragon's and George's. To know what a George is, you need to read the Book!!
