Overview

R to L (Japanese Style)

The second half of Toriyama's touchstone saga, Dragon Ball Z is the ultimate science fiction martial arts manga. After years of training and adventure, Son Goku has become Earth's ultimate warrior, and his son, Gohan, shows even greater promise. But the strikes are increasing as even deadlier enemies threaten the planet. And that means non-stop action as Goku, Gohan, time travelers, aliens, deities and the mighty Super Saiyans clash over the fate of the universe!

The Many Faces of Freeza After a razor-close call, Son Goku and company triumphed in rescuing the Dragon Balls from Freeza's evil claws. Now they must go head to head with one seriously ticked-off alien overlord! What's worse, Freeza's got a trick up his sleeve. He has the power to transform--not once, not twice, but three times--and with each new hideous face comes a massive power increase! With Goku recovering from his fight with Captain Ginyu, the gang must band together and hold Freeza off as long as they can. But even with all their power combined, the odds are in Freeza's favor. As the battle rages on, defeating Freeza seems more and more impossible. The only hope lies in the one thing Freeza fears--the legend of the Super Saiyan!

DragonBall Z to me was the best anime series, is the best anime series, and always will be the best anime series! Most things that i enjoy are just short-lived fads, but after almost 6 years i find that my interest in the dragonball, dragonball z, and dbgt series has not decreased in the slightest. When I was smaller, I collected and played with the action figures.(i have about 25 of them now.) when I got a bit older i started collecting the cards which i have over 300 of. And now that the show is loosing it's popularity now among the general public i am beginning to collect the videos and dvd's as well as the BOOKS!!! they are the best anime I have ever read!!!!! Pick some of them up today!!!!

I only have this manga in Japanese but still, this volume is flat-out awesome, IMHO... the battle is so intense and dramatic, I just couldn't put the book down until I'd finished. If you're a fan of the series shown on Toonami, this and all the other db/z mangas are definitely worth picking up because unlike what's shown on Cartoon Network, the content is fully uncut for the most part and if you like action and drama, give this a chance because I don't think you'll be sorry, unless you really hate how strong the characters are or think the series is overrated or something.

I already put up a review on the VizBig format for Volume 1, and I recommend reading it if you're on the fence, since I don't want to rehash the pros and cons (mostly pros, some minor complaints). I wanted to offer a separate review on this for anyone doubtful about renewing their DBZ collection or on the fence about it: Get. This. Volume. It's the entirety of the Goku vs Freeza fight and, for that reason alone, is well worth getting. While I highly resent Viz's (or whoever made the decision) choice to not restore color to every originally colored chapter in this volume, the ones that are there, combined with the higher quality printing and larger paper size, really lets you appreciate the format. Most of all though, it really ramps up the nostalgia trip going through it creates. If you only want to get get one VizBig volume, this one, or the first Dragon Ball volume, are what I'd recommend before any others. Although, obviously, if you're just starting out... I'd suggest against that.
