Meet the Author

Clive Cussler
Clive Cussler
Author of the wildly popular seafaring adventure series starring man's men Dirk Pitt® and Kurt Austin®, former ace advertising exec Clive Cussler is also a sea searcher in real life and has discovered some of history's most famous shipwrecks.

Biography

Cussler began writing novels in 1965 and published his first work featuring his continuous series hero, Dirk Pitt, in 1973. His first non-fiction, The Sea Hunters, was released in 1996. The Board of Governors of the Maritime College, State University of New York, considered The Sea Hunters in lieu of a Ph.D. thesis and awarded Cussler a Doctor of Letters degree in May, 1997. It was the first time since the College was founded in 1874 that such a degree was bestowed.

Cussler is an internationally recognized authority on shipwrecks and the founder of the National Underwater and Marine Agency, (NUMA) a 501C3 non-profit organization (named after the fictional Federal agency in his novels) that dedicates itself to preserving American maritime and naval history. He and his crew of marine experts and NUMA volunteers have discovered more than 60 historically significant underwater wreck sites including the first submarine to sink a ship in battle, the Confederacy's Hunley, and its victim, the Union's Housatonic; the U-20, the U-boat that sank the Lusitania; the Cumberland, which was sunk by the famous ironclad, Merrimack; the renowned Confederate raider Florida; the Navy airship, Akron, the Republic of Texas Navy warship, Zavala, found under a parking lot in Galveston, and the Carpathia, which sank almost six years to-the-day after plucking Titanic's survivors from the sea.

In September, 1998, NUMA - which turns over all artifacts to state and Federal authorities, or donates them to museums and universities - launched its own web site for those wishing more information about maritime history or wishing to make donations to the organization. (www.numa.net).

In addition to being the Chairman of NUMA, Cussler is also a fellow in both the Explorers Club of New York and the Royal Geographic Society in London. He has been honored with the Lowell Thomas Award for outstanding underwater exploration.

Cussler's books have been published in more than 40 languages in more than 100 countries. The author lives in Arizona.

Good To Know

Cussler worked for many years in advertising and was responsible for coming up with Ajax's "White Knight" commercial catchphrase, "It's stronger than dirt."

The Board of Governors of the Maritime College, State University of New York, considered Cussler's 1996 nonfiction book, The Sea Hunters, equivalent to a Ph.D. thesis and awarded Cussler a Doctor of Letters degree in 1997.

Cussler is a fellow in the Explorers Club of New York and the Royal Geographic Society in London, and has been granted the Lowell Thomas Award for outstanding underwater exploration.

    Very Good Action

This book has the usual mix of action, adventure, mystery and suspense that you would expect. But it has an added mix of humor and over the top suspense with great writing that will make you feel in the story. The characters have great personality and are well developed. The best action book I have read in years. Cussler went the extra yard with this one.

    A great book!

The book Dragon by Clive Cussler is another Dirk Pitt adventure about Japan starting a nuclear holocaust. The main theme of this book is adventure. Clive Cussler comes at this from a little bit of a different perspective. The main character isn't a superhero or a war hero. He is a professional diver that works for NUMA, national underwater and marine agency. This makes for an interesting story because he isn't the best at saving the world.
A common thing for Clive Cussler to do is write a past story first and then have the story tie in with it somehow. In this book, they past story is about a b-29 bomber carrying out one of the first atomic bombs. The next chapter he writes about a ship coming across an abandoned ship and how there was a nuclear explosion. After this, Dirk Pitt and others set out to find out whose bombs they were and how to stop them from doing it again.
One thing about this book that I like is that it is very real. When Dirk is hurt, he will be out of the picture for a few days to months. It isn't like the Bourne movies, where he gets shot in the leg and he limps for 2 seconds and then starts running again. Also he is cautious, rather than just running in and trusting everything will go to plan. One thing that doesn't seem very real, however, is the fact that they have technology in 1980 that we don't even have now.
I really liked this book. It had enough action and adventure for me. It also had plenty of humor. In one instant, Clive Cussler put himself into the book. It is believable enough that I think it is an actual possibility for a threat. The characters are believable and not perfect. The technology did bug me a little, but that's all it was, a minor bug.

Cussler is one of the best authors ever. This books though fictional is quite possible. I especially loved the robo-guards. Dirk is cool and funny while still beating up the bad guy. Speaking of the bad guy, he was super bad. Clive can make a Bond villian look like Barney with his evil-master-minds. Dirk and Al work great together and you feel like they are the best of buds. Action was great too. I love how Dirk finds the hard-ware shop. I was wondering how Dennings' Demons were going to work in and once I found out my mind said 'Duh'! The ending is great. Pure escapist adventure!

    Dirk rocks!

Many of my friends have been trying to get me to read Clive Cussler and Dragon was my first. Let's just say it won't be my last. Great great storytelling. I also got to love an author that can make a cameo appearance in his story. That was great. I am going to read Raise the Titanic next and start buying up the rest of the Dirk Pitt series.

    A great read

I've read about half of Clive Cussler's "Dirk Pitt" novels, and I think this is the one I enjoyed the most. Although it was written over a decade ago in a time when Americans were more paranoid about a takeover by the Japanese (both economically and politically), it still makes for a good read today. As is customary with a Cussler novel, the book is really more like three adventures in one with each section hooked together by yet another attempt on Dirk's life. A great book for a plane trip.

    The best ending ever

Well if you read the review above mine, I guess you already know what happens but this could have the best ending ever and even though another review tells you what happens it is still worth reading has any Clive Cussler novel is. When I read my first Clive Cussler novel is was shocked to find that it is just about a scientist who is always in the wrong place at the wrong time. Dirk Pitt works for NUMA but he is just there to look in the deep ocean. Dirk pitt collects fancy cars and restores them. This book could quite possibly be the best Clive Cussler ever made. Usually along Pitt's side is Al Giordino, a street smart man who is just like Pitt in several ways

    His best ever?

In this book Dirk Pitt faces more hairraising adventures than ever before. A ship filled with japanese cars is drifting through the Atlantic. A group of brave men enters the ghostlike ship, but something is wrong. The men suddenly start dying and when one of the crew shoots himself to end his suffering he set of a nuclear explosion. The american government hands the case to NUMA where Dirk Pitt works. Soon the clues directs him towards Japan. His partner and best friend Girdino infiltrates a huge underwater base belonging to a powerful japanese corporation. At the same time powerful people from the american government are kidnapped in their own country. Pitts and Girdinos misson is now to free the american hostages that were taken and to set a permanent stop to the terror of the fanatic japanese corporation. To stop the illegal corporation from threatening the rest of the world, Pitt tries to use a nuclearbomb that was once used during the second world war but that never exploded, instead it fell to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Pitt moves the bomb using a underwater CAT-machine and sets the timer. But will he escape before the bomb spreads its devestation?
