Children's Literature - Gail Krause
Who knows what "secrets" an abandoned house holds? Four boys with nothing in common except one of those "secrets" find out in Dragon Magic, the fourth in a "Magic" series for young readers from Andre Norton. The secret the jeweled dragon puzzle holds for each of them sparks a journey that places each boy in a time long forgotten in their culture. There, they find they play an important part in history where they deal with, work with, and battle dragons. It's a well-written heroes journey times four. Sig finds himself battling an enchanted dragon linked to Viking lore. Ras is cast as a Nubian prince captured and sold as a slave. He is linked to Daniel of biblical fame as they keep watch over an Egyptian dragon serpent. Artie becomes the son of Marius, a faithful follower of King Arthur, and finds himself defending the Pendragon flag and bearing witness to the death of a king. Kim deals with a five-toed Chinese dragon. An elderly advisor to the Chinese emperor appears to be unable to handle his responsibility of commander of the great armies, but when he stakes his own head as a wager on success and admits his fatal error, the emperor rewards his honesty and he is forevermore known as "the slumbering dragon." In the end, all four boys who were loners before their adventures began find themselves in a close-knit friendship where learning about their individual experiences leads to knowledge and friendship.

Dragon Magic
There was a table right in the middle of the room, a chair by it, and nothing else at all. Except a box on the table. Sig crossed to look at it.
Velvety dust all over, which he smeared away quickly. Then the flashlight picked up bright colors, so bright they seemed to glitter. There was a picture, or rather four pictures, for the top of the box was quartered into four sections. And the pictures--were pictures of dragons!
The dragon at the top was a silvery color and it had wings. It was holding up its clawed forefeet as if it were going to attack. Its red tongue, which was forked at the end like a snake's, stuck straight out of its mouth, and its green eyes stared directly at Sig.
