It's Dragon Day at Camelot Middle School, the annual fair that features a robot joust. Artie King and his pals Wayne and Percy get into trouble with Principal Dagger when Wayne's bowling ball goes through her windshield. The boys must quickly pay for the damage so they decide to build a remote-controlled dragon, enter the robot joust, and win the coveted Dragon Cup and the prize money. But Artie learns that the mean kids at school, known as The Horde, have forced Percy to build a better, bigger bot, so Artie and his friends have to find another way to win the contest. They go to the evil genius Evo's house and trade a limited-edition action figure for a universal remote that is guaranteed to help them defeat the Horde's robot. At the start of the competition, however, Artie decides that he would rather play fair than cheat to win. In the end, the good guys win the money, Principal Dagger gets her car fixed, and Artie and his friends come out on top. This graphic novel is funny, sends a great message without being preachy, and will keep upper elementary readers eager for more adventures about Artie and the Knights. Reviewer: Lauri Berkenkamp

Gr 4-8–Young Artie King and his knights, Percy and Wayne, are preparing for the annual Dragon Day at school. Mischief occurs at the start of the tale when Wayne’s bowling ball soars into the air and lands on the principal’s windshield. In order to raise money to get it repaired, the young knights are signed up by Artie’s sister, Morgan, to compete in the Dragon Duel robot tournament. The fun and mayhem begin when the boys attempt to get help on building a robot that could possibly win against the bully, Horde, who is known for cheating. Merlin is the wise science teacher who guides Arthur in the right direction, and instead of the Ladies of the Lake, the wisdom and foresight come from the Ladies of the Lunch who stir a large boiling pot and speak in rhyme.
