Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
An arranged marriage between Prince Rohan of Stronghold and the ``sunrunner'' Sioned of Goddess Keep promises to bring a new kind of peace to a strife-torn land until the machinations of a self-serving High Prince plunge the world into war. Romance, intrigue, magic, and myth mingle freely in this first of a series that should appeal to readers of fantasy and epic romance. JC

    Excellent story teller

Melanie Rawn tells a great story. This is a romance set in a world of dragons princes politics and war. Her characters are well developed and her world is easy to get lost in.

THIS WAS THE BEST SERIES I HAVE READ IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!!

If you want a book where you can fall in love with the characters and feel like you are really there this is the one! I really could feel what the characters were feeling. I would cry with them, laugh with them, and be excited witht them. I wish Melanie Rawn would write some more books so I could read them. This book was so wonderful and beautiful. I was really sad when I finished the series because it had become something I always looked forward to.

It the one I'd tell anyone to read!

I first stumbled into Melaine Rawn's books at a garage sell. I was told I wouldn't be dissappointed. She was right on!!!! I couldn't have done better. I never read a book that had dragons or sunnrunners in it, so I was quiet skeptically at first. Rawn is great when she intergrates the politics, the magic, the dragons, and all the human emotions that go with it. And still having the average reader understanding it all. As a skeptic I found myself wishing it to be true. I look forward to reading her future books!! She's made a fan out of me!

This series Dragon Prince and it's sequiel series Dragon Star has been my favorite series for years. I've read it
through at least 3 times! It is detailed, but in a way that truely allows you to enter and experience the world Ms.
Rawn created.  Characters develope and grow in the books, and you get to know them. My all time favorite. I was
looking for a bundle of both series for my nook  but alas, no bundles.

This book was hard to get into at first so much detail writing it. But after reading the whole series well worth it. A long battle but the characters were well thought out.

Very good reading and i would recommend it to all that love the long battle in this Fantasy.

    Decent, but has problems

I've read the whole series, this trilogy and the follow-up trilogy, and my comments span all volumes. Her characters, with one exception far into the series (Andry, whose only real difference is a refreshing taste of utilitarianism) are un-dynamic: the good characters are unrealistically good; when not exemplifying pureness of heart, they are aghast at their flaws, base emotions, or even necessary past action. Not to mention that the good characters (there are not any in-betweens) invariably possess great cunning and genius, whereas the evil characters are predictably vile and dull-witted. This creates a pretty drab storyline where good always prevails, in spite of a few good characters (mostly the ones not very fleshed out) die along the way, or some apparent setbacks. Oh, and the good characters are all remarkably relaxed and progressive pacifist/feminist/egalitarian for wealthy rulers and warriors in a feudal dictatorship. My other problem is that for a feudal system of government, even in the lands ruled by the vile royalty, there's no noise from the peasants--they're not only happy, but seemingly capitalist in how they conduct business as well. They aren't dissatisfied with anything (or aren't verbose about it if they are) and none seem to be in poverty or oppression anywhere. The world is too idyllic and unrealized to be believable. The peasants may die or be conquered or starve, but we might only hear about such things in a casual sentence, but we never see it or experience such from their perspective. If suffering for peasants exists at all in this world, the ruling class is so far removed from it that one wonders whether they're really caring despots at all. Stylized personalities and isolation of the characters from their world makes the aristocrats that the story revolves around seeming 2-dimensional characters in a soap opera, with the rest of the world off-stage and unreal, and people on all sides throwing walls of faceless warriors at each other for the benefit of faceless peasants. Did I mention we never really get to meet a peasant in any meaningful way? There are no characters but lords and ladies and merchants and vassals, and occasionally a high-ranking soldier or magician. I hate to be cruel, because they were entertaining in a way, but that's what i thought.

Wonderful Character Driven Epic Fantasy Adventure

Excellent read! I first read this book back in the mid '90's and was fascinated by the depth 'and sheer numbers!' of the characters in the story. The use of color and environment is phenomenal. I consider Dragon Prince to be a 5 star novel, but I think the later books in the storyline are even better. Melanie Rawn is not afraid to de-rail the typical storyline, so the story line is very unpredictable. I can't stress this enough, she is wonderfully adept at going against the grain of what you will want her to write, but in the end making you love what she wrote even more! I recommend reading all the way to the very last sentence of the last book. The two trilogies are closed forever with one of the most poignant farewells I've ever read. I hope my review has helped you choose to read the two Dragon series by Melanie Rawn

    magically addictive

Melanie Rawn was a wonderful suprise,I can't wait to get to the rest of this series. The dynamics of this world made me want to close my eyes to see for myself, I could almost feel the warmth of the desert. The only thing that dissapointed me was that I hadn't found her sooner!!!

    AWESOME!

I read this book about a year ago, my World Histroy teacher having recommended it to me. I have just begun to think about it again and I can remember vivid details that in most other books I would not. I found that plot and all the little extras quite enjoyable and there was not a part in it that I found unsatisfactory. Melanie Rawn did a very good job writing this story and it is now one of my favorite books, even though I have only read it once. Any fantasy reader would love it.

    excellent!!

I have never been able to read a book more than once, no matter how many years passed. I first read Dragon Prince after it was recommended to me by a friend, nearly two or so years ago. I started reading again two days ago and will have it finished by tonight. There's so much in these books and after reading the entire series once, it's impossible to not want to go back and read it again!

    Awesome!

I actually picked this one up in my school library. I am a big fan of Fantasy novels and was looking for something in that effect, a friend of mine recomended this (and the rest of the series) Truth be told, it's the first book that ever made me cry, literally, on the outside. Thats just impressive. If your a fantasy lover, it just doesn't get much better. Do yourself a favor and read this series!
