Editorial Reviews

Private site - Amber Sweetapple
"This is Beauty and the Beast as it is meant to be, at once wreathed in fantasy and magic, and grounded in the hard truths of reality and love. Ms. Pope has a style unique and totally her own...she can conjure the peasant towns and drafty castles of the Middle Ages, the magic and folklore reminiscent of influences like J.R.R. Tolkien and Tad Williams, as well as the insightful understanding of human psychology and love anchoring this potent and compelling tale."

Meet the Author

A native of Southern California, Christine Pope has been writing stories ever since she commandeered her family’s Smith-Corona typewriter back in the sixth grade. Her short fiction has appeared in Astonishing Adventures, Luna Station Quarterly, and the journal of dark fiction, Dark Valentine. Two of her short stories have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize.

Ms. Pope writes as the mood takes her, and her work encompasses paranormal romance, fantasy, horror, science fiction, and historical romance. She blames this on being easily distracted by bright, shiny objects, which could also account for the size of her shoe collection. After spending many years in the magazine publishing industry, she now works as a freelance editor and graphic designer in addition to writing fiction. She lives with her husband and an explosively fluffy Pomeranian mix in the San Gabriel Valley of Southern California, and in fact just returned to the town where she was born, thus disproving the theory that you can’t go home again.

This book, while not great, was an enjoyable retelling of Beauty

This book, while not great, was an enjoyable retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Although this time, the Beast is a dragon.

The story is well told from the perspective of the heroine, Rhianne, who dreams of being an artist. Although, sadly for her, that dream quickly appears shattered when is is decided she shall marry the Lord of the lands. An interesting blend the known story with some new twists. Most of the book was predicable but the author shows her own ideas and thought in various ways as you read along.

My biggest complaint is that I couldn't connect with the characters. I love the Beauty and the Beast stories and this is the first one that, when finished, I still could not draw up emotion for the characters much. That really did take away from the story some. Don't get me wrong. They were alright, I just felt disconnected somewhat.

Still, a beautiful world awaits with an enthralling tale! The writing is well done, the world set up nicely. The story is both familiar and unique at the same time. I am glad I out this book and hope others enjoy it too.

Good Re-telling of Beauty and the Beast

I usually don't care for books that re-tell a familiar story or fairy tale, but this book was good. Well written and it held my attention all the way through.

I'd say this book was suitable for teens through adults.

Fairy tale with emphasis on magic and romance.
