Children's LiteratureBook two in the "Outcast" series, this epic fantasy continues the story of Timothy Cade, an un-magical boy born into a world dependant on magic. As an un-magician, Timothy has the power to disrupt any spells around him, making him extremely dangerous to the world of mages. Although fear and prejudice lead the council of mages to see Timothy and his Wurm-friend Verlis as enemies, Timothy is only concerned with fulfilling his promise to help Verlis restore peace to his world. In an alternate dimension, the Wurm-clans are engaged in a horrific war. Meanwhile, a destructive Grandmaster has left the mages reeling, leading to the appointment of Constable Grimshaw. Grimshaw is a treacherous and narrow-minded deputy, who is determined to prevent Timothy from helping the Wurms. As the story progresses, the long-term effects of prejudice and social inequality become ever-more important as Timothy must challenge the long-held beliefs of the council. In addition, Timothy is an amazing inventor, who is skilled at adapting non-magical ways of doing things. His inventions add an elegant and unusually imaginative element to this somewhat pedestrian fantasy. Regardless, the novel is a gripping read, fast-paced and suspenseful. 2004, Aladdin Paperbacks/Simon and Schuster, Ages 10 to Adult.
