Overview

When an orphan girl named Creel befriends a dragon, she unknowingly inherits a pair of slippers that could be used to save her kingdom, or destroy it. Perfect for fans of Shannon Hale and Cornelia Funke’s Dragon Rider, the light tone and charming characterizations bring this heartwarming fantasy to life. Older middle grade readers and young teens alike will appreciate the adventure, fun, and dragon-drenched action!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Creel is a poor, orphaned, farm girl with a talent for embroidery. When her aunt decides to sacrifice her to a dragon in order to lure a knight or prince who might marry her, Creel sees it as a way to escape her boring life. She does not expect to meet a real dragon in the caves above her village, so she is even more surprised when the real dragon does not want to eat her. Creel makes a deal to keep the approaching mob away from the dragon's lair if he gives her a pair of fabulous shoes from his hoard. The shoes Creel picks turn out to be the most valuable treasure in all of her kingdom, and they enable her to communicate with the dragons. As she sets off on her way to pursue her dream of working in a dress shop in the king's city, Creel is rescued from bandits by another friendly dragon. Creel and the dragon Shardas strike up a special friendship that becomes the centerpiece of the novel. Creel continues on to the king's city, where she finds work, friends, and adventure. As the story continues, Creel discovers that her special shoes have the power to save or destroy the kingdom, and she must face the future with bravery. The novel's female characters are spunky, the dragon lore is well-crafted, and the story is a balance of comic and tragic elements. This is a fun first novel from George that would delight fantasy fans of Shannon Hale or Gail Carson Levine.
VOYA
To raise the family out of poverty, Creel's aunt concocts a plan to sacrifice Creel to a dragon so that a wealthy knight will save and marry her. But Creel has her own plans, and to finance her adventure, she decides to bargain for a piece of the dragon's gold. But this dragon hoards shoes, not gold, and Creel is given a beautiful pair of blue slippers, which she soon discovers have special powers. Finding herself victim of an evil princess and in the middle of a war that threatens to destroy everything including her dragon friends, it is up to Creel to outwit the enemy and save the innocents. Mixing the comic-fantasy tradition of Patricia C. Wrede with the heroine quest elements of Robin McKinley and Tamora Pierce, George creates a marvelous fantasy that fans of those authors will relish. The plot is fast paced with all the right touches of romance and adventure. Only minor lapses, such as a lack of a real explanation of how the evil princess gained knowledge of the slippers' powers and thus her exact role in initiating the war, tarnish the work. The characters are wonderfully drawn, and Creel is particularly dynamic and strong. While staying solidly within the bounds of a traditional fantasy setting, George creates something new that will undoubtedly delight readers with its unexpected twists and turns, and the satisfying yet mysterious ending will leave readers clamoring for more from this first-time author.
Kirkus Reviews
Creel wants to go to the King's Seat so she can earn her living by embroidering her unique designs. But danger and adventure ensue. There are dragons, magic slippers and a handsome prince. There is also treason, war and destruction. But Creel is not meek or passive; she takes the initiative and leads perilous defensive and offensive maneuvers that eventually win the battle. George weaves a picaresque tale with a cast of quirky characters into a medieval fantasy. Relationships among social classes and the trials and tribulations of women trying to improve their lot are nicely incorporated into the context of the story. While the names and events sound suitably archaic, at times the syntax of the narration and dialogue has a decidedly modern twist. But this serves to make the tale more accessible and Creel a more sympathetic and human creation. Not entirely original, but clever, well-plotted and good fun. (Fiction. 10-14)

    Sooo Great!

This book was a fantastic book that I found recommended at the end of a book in the Frog Princess series by E.D. Baker. I read it, and was not disappointed. It made me so crazy (in a good way) and I was so happy when Creel finally gave...I won't give the name... The wallop to the face she deserved! The storyline was amazing, the characters realistic, and everything in between so absorbbing and funny that I didn't put it down until I was finished with it! Recommended? Absolutely!

Reviewed by Jocelyn Pearce for TeensReadToo.com

DRAGON SLIPPERS is one of the best fantasy books I've read in ages! I always feel like good fantasy is hard to find, but this book certainly succeeded in being that and much more.

When Creel's parents die, her rather silly aunt is going to be hard-pressed to come up with the money to feed Creel and her brother, so she comes up with a plan. She's going to give Creel to the dragon rumored to live in the hills near their town and convince a local nobleman's son to rescue and marry the "fair maiden."

Anyone with sense knows this is ridiculous. The dragon is only a myth...Right?

Wrong. Creel, however, is clever enough to talk her way out of the hands of the dragon (who doesn't really want to eat her, and, by the way, collects shoes, not gold), and out of the bargain she gets a comfortable pair of blue slippers, which she wears on the long walk to the capitol, where she wants to find work putting the sewing and embroidering skills taught to her by her mother to use. It seems like a simple enough plan; however, life is never as simple as we think it is going to be.

DRAGON SLIPPERS is an un-put-downable read, set in a vividly created fantasy world. The characters are wonderful, too (although I feel the storytelling, rather than the characters, is Jessica Day George's strength in this story). DRAGON SLIPPERS is an excellent novel, one sure to appeal to fantasy fans of all ages.

    THE BEST BOOK EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This book is SO amazing! It has a little bit of everything! Suspense, mystery, friendship, 'a tiny bit of' romance and loads of magic. Everyone will love this. I think its great that the tables have turned and know instead of the damsel in distress saved by the prince its The not so distressed damsel saving the prince, AND THE REST OF THE KINGDOM!! I loved this book!! Wow, I am not AS obsessed as I sound!! LOL

    Quick Read

A wonderful story that wove itself into a great adventure, with many twists and turns.

The characters held so much life and soul to them, it was as if they were actually flesh and blood at one point in time.

Dragon Slippers was mixed with friendship, trust, betrayal, romance and sometimes even humor.

After reading Dragon Slippers and finding out there was a sequel, I went to the bookstore and bought the next book Dragon Flight.
Both books were well written and I would recommend them to anybody, especially dragon lovers.

Dragon Slippers is a fantastical journey!

Dragon Slippers is a winner among many of my "children" associations. The children actually recommended the book to me! It is well worth the read and it is fun to engage the children in conversation regarding issues that arise within this story of fantasy. Understanding that it is a fantasy read is important prior to purchase of the book. Being a fan of Harry Potter and other fantastical creations, I thoroughly enjoyed Dragon slippers as well as Dragon Flight and Dragon Spear.

    Highly Enjoyable

I very much enjoyed this tale. The main female character was resourceful and determined and very well developed. The dragons were adorable and each unique in their own charming way. Easily recommended for younger readers as well as...more experienced.
