Library Journal
An assassin and the royal child he has been hired to kill form an unlikely and unstable alliance as the plots of human sorcerers, elven pirates, and dwarf revolutionaries threaten to overwhelm the airborne kingdoms of Arianus. Long-time collaborators Weis and Hickman (``The Darksword'' trilogy; ``The Rose of the Prophet'' trilogy) have embarked on their most ambitious project to date in this first of a projected seven-volume cycle. The authors' combined talents for innovative world-building and sympathetic characterizations find ample outlet in this epic fantasy. Recommended for most libraries.

Just as good as it was fifteen years ago

I spent my entire time in high school as a bigtime fantasy nerd and devoured this series. While I had forgotten many of the plot points I always remembered the series fondly and recommended it. Now, in my 30's, I have decided to re-read the series despite not having read a word of sword and sorcery style fantasy in a decade. I could not be happier. As opposed to much of what I enjoyed at that age, this book is just as enjoyable now. Just because the book covers look like standard fantasy schlock doesn't make it standard fantasy fare. Anyone who has ever loved fantasy should do themselves a favor and read this book. After the first act, you'll be hooked for the series.

    Excellent Read

This series was recommended by my fiance. I had never even heard of it before. I was looking for something new and decided to give them a chance. By the time I'd finished the first two chapters I was hooked. I couldn't put it down. The characters draw you in easily and allow you to experience a piece of there lives that leaves you wondering and guessing all the way through. Definitely recommend and I am looking forward to starting the next book!!

Great series but beware of typos

I read the deathgate cycle series when they first came out years ago and loved it. Having recently bought a nook reader, I decided to get this series in ebook (I still have my original paperbacks). THis ebook is riddled with typos that remind me of OCR mistakes. clark becomes dark. This ebook apparently did not received a good editing job but was rushed to get to market. I am not sure why they had to use OCR software.

    Loved these books

Weis and Hickman make a great pair. One is great with character development and the other with story line. The books do start a little slow because they are sitting up the story but once it gets going it is great. The books are well worth the money and I have read them all at least three or four times.

    Even better the 2nd time!

I read this series for the 1st time about 10 years ago. Having never finished (I think I made it to book 6) I decided to start over. Dragon Wing is a great book. I fell in love with it even faster this time as I started to recall who my favorite characters were (and there are many). The set up of the world is neat and plot twists pay out with regularity that kept me hooked until the end. As you would expect, not everything concludes by the final chapter, which didn't bother me at all as I rolled right into book 2: Elven Star. Lovers of fantasy who are looking for something different should check out this imaginative series!

    AVOID THIS BOOK

IF YOU CAN GET PAST THE NUMEROUS SPELLING ERRORS AND THE FAILED ATTEMPT AT NOVEL WRITING, NOT TO MENTION THE FORWARD / BACK AGAIN WRITING STYLE. YOU WILL BE CONFUSED THROUGH 85 % OF THE ENITER BOOK. AUTHORS SEEMED TO PUT TO MUCH EMPHASIS ON WORLD DETAILS. FLOWS OF MAGIC ARE CHAOTIC BUT THEY WOULD SHOW AN ORDER THROUGH CLUMISY DETAIL. I WISH I HAD NEVER BOUGHT THIS BOOK. WHAT A WAST OF MONEY!

    A MUST READ!!!

I am a big fan of Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman and their work. Of course (just like most of you) I started with Dragonlance and got hooked up on that stuff. I recently finished the whole Death Gate Cycle and I have to admit that it was wonderful. I really enjoyed reading it. What I expecially liked about it was development of Haplo character. In first few books all I wanted to do is to strangle him...but then everything changes...All in all I would recomend it highly to all good fantasy book lovers.

    Highly Recommended Book!

I picked up this book due to the catcher, the world has been split into four elemental worlds, and was only expecting an okay read. Something that you would read once, like it, but never pick up again. I was wrong! This is an excellent book opening for a faboulous series! Do not expect it to be your normal fantasy series!

    THE BEST!

If you like science fiction, but don't really get into all the fantasy stuff and/or all the space/galactica type stuff, this series is for you! It combines both into an all new, totally awesome adventure. The best book I have ever read.

    Death Gate Novels

Being an author myself, I very much enjoyed these outstanding novels. They were much different than what one would think to find in a fantsy story. An epic tale that is hard to understand until you read all of them. I enjoyed the way they discribed things so that one could picture what was going on in the characters' heads, and feel the movment of the words

    I loved them all!!

I loved the books in this series. I read them when i was still in school and finished them in the time i had off during school summer. Now im 24 and still hooked on the weis hickman novels. I hope to see more as the years go buy. My only regret is accidently giving this series away cause i forgot i had it in a book to donate items. But i see the bright side someone else will enjoy the creativity and fantastic story telling of these two great people.

    I Also Recommend:

    Too Much

There are so many great Fantasy books that I have read over the years that have really engrossed me and made me love this genera. This one isn't one of them. I prefer my "fantasy" to be mixed in with ample helpings of reality. Nothing is fantastical or magical if almost every character in the story has some hidden AMAZING power that can. . . cause ships to fly, transport themselves anywhere, heal mortal wounds, create whole cities in the sky etc. etc. While some parts of the book were interesting and entertaining, the majority of it was layered with so much complex magic, history, unexplainable ramblings of prior wars and motivations of races and organizations.

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. There are just so many other great stories in this genera that are better.

    Ikarie

Oksy I'm not going to lie, this book was AWSOME! The whole deathgate cycle was AWSOME! I actually read each book within days thats how good it was. The last one I read from 12 o clock in the morning till 8 o clock at night without stopping, I didn't eat, didn't go to the bathroom, I was engrossed, just couldn't put it down. I really loved all the charachters, especially Alfred and Hugh. They were my fav. I loved the whole plot and idea the book was based on. So yes in more simpler words, I highly recommand it, you won't be dissapointed! :D

    LOVED IT!!!!

a good friend of mine recomended this book to me awhile ago, and i have just now had a chance to read it. untill about half way, i couldn't see why she loved this book so much. then, about half way through, the plot takes a TOTALLY unexpected twist and thrusts the reader into a world of trickory and mysteries. once you finish the book, you can't wait to start the next one, and the next, and so on. the series is amazing....it's definatly one of my favorites!!!

    Great book

This book was great. I was excited to read it when I saw it on my mom's bookself. I enjoyed the book mostly because I wanted to find what was going on with the elves and the assassin, Hugh. Bane really cracks my crystals, though. His actions confussed me, but it made the book that much more interesting. I can't waitto read the next book.
