Overview

A Compelling, ground-breaking, highly imaginative tale from the most phenomenonally popular fantasy authors since J.R.R. Tolkien.

Creatures of legend, the dragons have returned to Krynn. Now, the darkness of war threatens to engulf the land. Then hope appears — a blue crystal staff in the hands of a beautiful bar barian woman. The promise of this hope forces a group of long-time friends into the unlikely roles of heroes: Tanis Half-Elven, their leader, a skilled warrior who detests fighting and is tormented by love for two women; Sturm Brightblade, Knight of Solamnia, driven to restore the honor of the knighthood; Raistlin Majere, the powerful and unsettling magic-user, whose hourglass-shaped eyes conceal dark mysteries; Caramon, Raistlin's twin, a genial giant both loved and feared by his brother; Flint Fireforge, the gruff old dwarven fighter, almost a father to them all; and Tasselhoff Burrfoot, a kender, the nuisance race of Krynn, immune to fear and followed by trouble wherever he goes.

These are the warm, memorable characters of Dragons of Autumn Twilight who bring alive the fantasy world of Krynn, a land millions of listeners will want to return to again and again.

This really goes over five stars if there was a choice!

Yes, it is sort of slow at first, but there is something in the book that makes you keep reading, and when you get to page 75 or so you cannot put it down! By page 200 it was straight to my top 10 list(maybe even 5). There is a little bit of love, extreme action, supense, danger, and twists and turns here and there. That silly kender Tasslehoff tips it off with humor. Slowly it builds up from some friends meeting to them fighting a Dragon Highlord! If you like swords, magic, love, humor, action, adventure, dragons and walking warrior skeletons, BUY THIS BOOK(at the very least read it)! I CAN GARANTEE YOU WILL NOT REGRET YOUR CHOICE!!!!! But all in all this book is undescribably one of the best books ever written.

    Not worth the hype

There's been so much hoo-haw about Dragonlance recently, that I figured I'd finally grab a copy and see what the fuss is about.

Now, granted, the very first book written was probably not the *best* choice, seeing as the authors were just getting themselves wrapped around the novelization of a D&D adventure, but it was the start of the saga, so it did seem like the right place to begin.

But the book has trouble. It's got way too many characters in it to be anything more than a plot-driven story, and the themes of the characters in the story never get explored as fully as they ought. There are sections describing underground exploration where lots of words are wasted describing the length of corridors. It feels like it's struggling with the question of whether its audience is adult or not.

The end result is a book that probably really appealed to 13-year-olds back in the early 80s. Today? There are many many more well-written books for 13-year-olds, and it's not all that great a journey for adults in any era. I did want to see how the book ended, so it was better than something needing only to be tossed out, but its companions will suffer at the bottom of my book pile for quite a while, as I pursue other, better written books.

One of my favorites after 17 yrs...

Seventeen yrs ago I read this book as a sr. in high school. Since then I've read countless fantasy books and still consider this series to be one of the top 3. My opinion, this series deserves to be mentioned in the same class as LOTR. Lately many of the fantasy books I've read seem to be lacking, I decided to re-read this series as was not disappointed.

This book and its series are like a good Hollywood movie they have an entertaining plot, likable characters, good action scenes and a somewhat predictable ending.
If that is what you are looking for then this is a great book to buy. It has been my personal favourite since I was young from allthe Epic-Fantasy I've ever read.
However If you are looking for something deeper like LOTR or with gore like Game of Thrones then don't buy it.

I really loved this book and am enjoying the journey through this series. Finished the first 3 and am not on 'Timebofnthe Twins." If you enjoy well plotted and written fantasy, this book is perfect for you.

A good start to what may prove to be a good series!

This story has a lot of characters to explain in the begining, which makes it drag just a bit. As the adventures start and each character develops, you begin to warm to the Quest. By the end of the book, you may well find your self looking forward to the next book. I know I did.

    It Started a Trend, but........

I'm fully aware that I got to this series of books VERY late, but if a book has lasting appeal then that shouldn't matter. However, having read my share of fantasy literature, I have to say that this book doesn't rise much above the most dusty cliches of the genre...a very standard Quest To Save The World undertaken by a central-casting variety of characters who struggle and bicker their way to a heroic, multi-volume finale. I'll assume that the authors have improved in the intervening years since 'Autumn Twilight' first appeared, but here their style is basically generic : they move the plot along quickly, and I admit I turned a lot of pages at a stretch, but it all feels depthless. This is 'guilty pleasure' reading--fine every once in a long while, especially for kids or those with wandering attention spans, but very unsatisfying to a more demanding kind of reader.I don't plan to race through the other two volumes of this clunky saga with breathless abandon.
