Overview

The Companions are back, and so are their enemies in the second volume of the Lost Chronicles.

Kitiara discovers that a former lover, Tanis Half-elven, and his friends were responsible for the death of Highlord Verminaard. This revelation puts Kit in danger, for Emperor Ariakas hears of the connection and suspects Kit of having arranged the assassination. He orders his witch, the exotic Iolanthe, to spy on Kit, who clinches her own doom by becoming obsessed with finding Tanis, convincing Ariakas that she is indeed a traitor. But Kit is not one to take a sentence of death easily.

Kit’s rival, Laurana, begins her own journey to destiny, as she travels to Icereach with Sturm, Flint, Tasslehoff, and three Solamnic knights led by Sir Derek Crownguard. The knights are on a quest for the fabled dragon orb that will be the salvation of Solamnia. What none of them know is that they are all being led into a deadly trap laid for them by the winternorn, the dark elf wizard Feal-Thas.

But it is Kitiara who faces the greatest challenge. To save herself, she vows to Takhisis that she will spend the night in Dargaard Keep, the dread castle of the death knight, Lord Soth. As she and Skie fly to challenge the death knight, Kit is well aware that in three hundred years, not one person who has ever faced Lord Soth has survived the ordeal.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
This evocative high fantasy novel continues Margaret Weis's The Lost Chronicles, the switcharoo series that tells the story of the War of the Lance from the perspective series of the bad guys. A worthy addition to the fan-favorite Dragonlance series.
Publishers Weekly

In this enterprising second volume of the Lost Chronicles (after 2006's Dragons of the Dwarven Depths), Emperor Ariakis pressures Dragon Highlord Kitiara uth Matar into a plan to make sure the Solamnic knight Derek Crownguard hears about, then quests after a dragon orb recently discovered by Dragon Highlord Feal-Thas. As Crownguard's will is weaker than the dragon essence inside the orb, he will become enthralled to it and compelled to do the bidding of Ariakis. Loathing the task but having no choice, Kitiara treks to Feal-Thas's Ice Palace in the dangerous land of Icereach. As Crownguard and his companions join up with the group of renegades led by Kitiara's rival, Laurana, Kitiara's path takes an unexpected turn, leading her to Dargaard Keep to face the dread Lord Soth. Weis and Hickman have once again produced an entertaining high fantasy adventure. (July)

From The Critics

This really goes over five stars if there was a choice!

Yes, it is sort of slow at first, but there is something in the book that makes you keep reading, and when you get to page 75 or so you cannot put it down! By page 200 it was straight to my top 10 list(maybe even 5). There is a little bit of love, extreme action, supense, danger, and twists and turns here and there. That silly kender Tasslehoff tips it off with humor. Slowly it builds up from some friends meeting to them fighting a Dragon Highlord! If you like swords, magic, love, humor, action, adventure, dragons and walking warrior skeletons, BUY THIS BOOK(at the very least read it)! I CAN GARANTEE YOU WILL NOT REGRET YOUR CHOICE!!!!! But all in all this book is undescribably one of the best books ever written.

    A spectacular finale

Tanis and the gang continue on their adventures, adding a few new characters with Steel and Palin. The Irda begin to start tampering with a small egg-like item. Completely unaware what is hidden inside the grey-stone, they unleash a power so great even the enhanced magic of the Irda can't withstand it. Chaos, now released from his prison, begins to wreak havoc on Krynn. Tanis and his friends must now fight for the very survival of their world. Tas comes out in one of the major roles, while most of the other main characters sorta sank into the background, allowing new characters to emmerge and really shine forth. This book is an exciting finale to the Chronicles Epic. I give this book an A+. A stimulating read.

    A Great Read

This book was great, filled with excitement at every turn. It is impossible to put it down. I was able to finish it in only one weekend. I suggest that if you have not read the original trilogy yet to do so first.

    Not Weis & Hickman's Best

After reading the amazing Legends and Chronicles trilogies I couldn't help but feel majorly let down by Second Generation. It's a collection of short stories involving the children of the Heroes of the Lance. There is a serious lack of action for each story and I found myself struggling to get through it. Some of the stories were a utterly ridiculous, especially the one involving Caramon's three sons and the search for graygem. An interesting introduction to the characters in Dragons of Summer flame nothing more. Definetly not required dragonlance cannon.

    The Yin to the Yang

Any good fanatasy needs a villan as dark as the heros are light. This book gives a more indepth look into Kitiara, her self serving obsessions, her role in the fate of Krynn and those she once shared her life with if not her heart. A MUST BUY for any Dragonlance fan.

One of my favorites after 17 yrs...

Seventeen yrs ago I read this book as a sr. in high school. Since then I've read countless fantasy books and still consider this series to be one of the top 3. My opinion, this series deserves to be mentioned in the same class as LOTR. Lately many of the fantasy books I've read seem to be lacking, I decided to re-read this series as was not disappointed.

    As Good as the Original!!!

If you have read other Dragonlance titles and think that it's absolutely great than here is some advice for you: Do not miss this epic adventure featuring the original cast from Chronicles and their children. Absolutly mind-blowing you cannot-whatever you do-put this down. When I read it I didn't even eat.I hope you love it as much as I do.

    A Must Read

The Second Generation is composed of several short story of the Heros of the Lance's children. If you just read this book and stop, you won't enjoy it. It's preview of the characters who are in Dragons of Summer Flame. It's to give you background infomation on those. So, if you read this great fiction, go direction to Dragons of Summer Flame.

English class for Dragons of Summer Flame

The book Dragons of Summer Flame was a strange book at first when I started to read it. All through the rest of the book it kept strange but it was still good. I liked it because it kept you on edge and I hope you will take the time to read my thoughts on it. This was a very interesting book. It is exceptionally written and an exciting story. The book is Fantasy type book but is very serious and well-developed story line. The characters have depth to them that make them very likable and you just hate the bad guys. The story is based upon the gods of Krynn and the mortals that live there. That is the first reason I liked it. The plot is great too. The father Chaos resumes his rampage and the heroes must stop him. Battles, romance and running away are all in this book. The story starts out just like any story that is fantasy I feel. That is all that is similar to most fantasy stories. It takes you on a roller coaster ride after that. Palin, Brightblade and Caramon are a few really good characters in the book. The way the wrote it made me want to know what these characters were going to do next. This is second reason I liked this book. These are the reasons I liked this book. It was witty, well written and fun to read. It made the time pass away and let the imagination run. I hope you will pick it up some time to read it. It was great fun for me and will be for you too.

    WOW....

This is what 'Dragons of Summer Flame' could have (and should have) been. This time the publishers got it right--they let Margaret and Tracy do their thing unchecked. And WOW!! This is an incredicble novel. It is so very wonderful to have Weis and Hickman back--they've been sorely missed. There are many moments of surprise. Even as the book neared completion, there were events that triggered a 'what the hell?!' reaction. The end is a shocker, though looking back, I should have guessed. But that is what makes this novel great. It lays out all of the clues you need allowing you to try and put the puzzle that is the story's crux together. It reality, this is an epic MYSTERY. This was a wonderful and marvelous fantasy EXPERIENCE. I am an avid fantasy reader, and this is the most FUN I've had in the genre in a long time!!

    Kender sent back in time?

The Chronicles left me begging for more. 'Time of the Twins' is every bit as good. Ms. Weis and Ms. Hickman make you believe that you are thrown backwards in time with Raistlin (my favorite character), Caramon, Crysania, and even Tas to the days prior to the Cataclysm. After reading the Chronicles, I felt that this book was bringing me in touch with some old friends. That is how well the characters are described. A must read for anyone who enjoys science fiction/fantasy. You may want to read the Chronicles (listed below) first.

    Great Continuation to the Story

The story continues where the last book left off. It gets darker and more desperate leading up to the next book. The story is told in a way that makes you want to keep reading. Highly recommended if you read the Dragons of Autumn Twilight.

Lost Chronicles Should Have Stayed Lost

This is the absolute worst Dragonlance novel I have ever read (including those horrible Jean Rabe books that came out after Wizards of the Coast bought TSR and attempted to "reboot" the series) and I have been a Dragonlance fan since 1992 ...

It isn't just the writing style or the story itself - both weak at best - that make this a terrible novel. From start to finish, there is a vague "wrongness" that pervades the novel, a sense that something is missing, that something just isn't right. That missing something is love. It is clear from the writing that Weis and Hickman are no longer "in love" so to speak with these characters. They have moved on. The love, the passion, that these two authors felt for their characters, that shot through the Chronicles and the Legends, is gone.

The Lost Chronicles should have stayed lost.
