Steer, "purports to be the facsimile of an 1895 [book]" (according to a publisher's note), and is quite convincing as the long-lost research of 19th-century dragonologist Drake. Presenting a "scientific" study of dragons, the volume examines the different dragon species and their behavior, using fold-out flaps, patches of textured "skin" or "membranes," and sample science-notebook-style labeled drawings. In addition to the clever text and persuasive illustrations by Helen Ward, Douglas Carrel and Wayne Anderson, the interactive book includes an insert on dragon script, a mini-book of dragon riddles and a glass dragon eye bound into the back cover. Everything you need to know about dragons is included in this lushly packaged volume. Antiqued pages give the impression that this information has been passed from generation to generation. Would-be dragonologists will learn the five F's of dragonology: "fieldwork, foresight, forwardness, frankness, fatalities ('unless these are avoided, the student will make little progress.')." Western and various Eastern species are presented, along with the biology and physiology of dragons. In the section on the life cycle, there are lift-the-flap eggs that show its growth and development. The equipment needed to track dragons, and information on spells is provided. Readers will learn about Beowulf and George of Cappadocia who were famous dragonslayers, and about Merlin, Marco Polo and Fu Hsi who are important dragonologists. A bit of cautionary, tongue-in-cheek humor can be found in such phrases as, "It is not recommended to leave children and hungry dragons alone." The illustrations include a fold-out of a dragon, a dragon skin specimen, and a close look at the very important dragon eye. Gr 2-7-This faux nonfiction title carries echoes of James Gurney's Dinotopia (Turner, 1992; o.p.) in that it purports to be the actual writings of English dragonologist Ernest Drake. Unlike Dinotopia, however, this book is not a narrative, but rather an almost encyclopedic treatment of the subject. It delivers on its subtitle and covers every aspect of the study of dragons, treating the magical creatures as if they were real objects of scientific study. The discussion of the different species includes all types of dragons with which children might be familiar, from Chinese dragons to the European ones of the Grimm fairy tales. One particularly fun bit is the dragon alphabet, combined with some ancient runes written in dragon that can be translated. An aspect of the book that will be totally fascinating to children is the natural history of this creature, including diagrams of its skeletal and muscular structures, and even the development of a dragon embryo in the egg. The illustrations, mainly in color, and overall design of the book are appealing, from a foldout map of "Dragons of the World" to the flaps and cutouts throughout. Meet the Author

Dr. Ernest Drake is said to have lived in St. Leonard’s Forest, Sussex, England, in the late nineteenth century and to have issued a very limited run - some 100 copies - of DRAGONOLOGY in 1895. A noted dragonologist and a founding member of the Secret & Ancient Society of Dragonologists in London, Dr. Ernest Drake was determined to bring the subject of dragons under the burgeoning umbrella of the nineteenth-century natural sciences. He had absolutely no doubt that dragons exist, and his notes suggest that he had no little experience of them. Apparently, only one copy of DRAGONOLOGY ever appeared in public, surfacing in the basement of a secondhand bookstore in London in 1987. The book was accompanied by a letter, dated 1904, addressed to an unnamed apprentice. Dr. Ernest Drake’s painstaking work has been faithfully reproduced in this unique volume.

    MINDBLOWING

    this book is amasing no doubt about it but before you buy it I would suggest the book TRACKING AND TAMING DRAGONS to give you a basic knoledge.

    AMAZING!

    I looked at it in the store and my first exspression was 'Every child in the world would love this book'This is such an awesome book.I've read Wizardology and this auther is amazing!

    The Fantastic Book

    Doctor Drake does it again with dragonology. What a map, so many types, such a big world, Spells and magic everywhere, Air. Speed. Fire. Dragons! The world fire-breathing beasts thought to be evil, but very gentle when being trained.

    Awesome Book for Dragon Lovers Everywhere!

    I love this book! Anyone who reads it will simply fall into the world of dragons! Very convincing and realistic. I respect other reviewers opinions, but I think that every bit of this book must be 100% true! You can feel the dragon skin and wing membrane samples and notice their leathery texture. you stare into the eye of the dragon 'on the back cover' and quake from the gaze that is returned. With this book, you can imagine the magestic power that is displayed by dragons, and know that they are a truly awesome, and endangered, species, and must be protected from extinction. Great for dragonologists and cryptozoologists.

    The Ologies Are All the Rage

    My son goes to a small private school and all the kids are really into these ology books. I believe that Daragonology was the first one written. It's nice to have the trend be the ownership of books. My son wants to collect them all.

    Believe!!!!!!!!

    This book was awsome!!!!!!If you are not a believer then don't read it beacause only true believers will understand the beauty of it!I do BELIEVEthat dragons DO EXIST and are most likely in hiding.If you put yourself to think, they must have or do exist. I very much apreciate Mr. Drakes research and I hope to one day continue his work and maybe befriend a dragon someday. BELIEVE AND YOU WILL BE BELIEVED.

    Wonderful book

    This book and the others like it such as fairyopolis are just wonderful. Kids of all ages will love it. My goddaughter and her cousin had so much fun discovering all the secrets the books hold. This would be a great addition to any child's collection.

    It's OK for people who don't believe in dragons but...

    If you do believe, don't trust all of what this book says,and be careful with some information or you could end up flame-grilled! The dragon pictures aren't really copies of the dragons themseves, so it doesn't even quite show you what dragons look like. if you ask me this 'Ernest Drake' Is much like Crowly, he plays fake with something that's real, either that or someones edited Ernest's work to make it more like fantasy and less like real.

    Touching Dragons

    I liked this book because there are things from dragons you can touch. For example, you can touch shedded skin from an asian lung dragon and a wing membrane from a frost dragon. I also liked reading about different dragon spells such as a spell for invisability (temporary) and a dragon protecting spell (also temporary). There is interesting information about all kinds of dragons.
