Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Naomi Milliner
Divided into four chapters, this nonfiction book explores the legends behind dragons, the existence of real dragons (like the Komodo dragon), and how they have been, and are, viewed in different cultures. The first chapter, "In the Beginning," includes a charming tale of the Babylonian dragon goddess who gave birth to all of the gods, then tried to destroy them. Unhappily for her, one of her offspring killed her instead, and then created the earth and sky out of her body. (I'm still trying to figure that one out.) The next two chapters, "Dragons of Europe" and "Dragons of Asia" are easier to relate to, and more up-to-date, describing events like the Dragon Boat Festival, which is still held today in China. The last section, "Real Dragons," discusses the likelihood of "ancient people" mistaking dinosaur bones for dragon bones, and explores contemporary dragon-like creatures like Gila monsters and lizards. One in a series of five "For Real?" books, it includes a glossary (words like "myths" and "talons" are introduced in bold face), suggested books and websites, and beautiful color photographs—the best part of the book—on almost every page. Ironically, the display of mythic creatures on The American Museum of Natural History website is far more captivating and exciting than this book. Add that to the fact this slim 23-page book is almost a dollar per page while the website is free, you may want to save your money and head straight to www.amnh.org/exhibition/mythiccreatures instead.
