    'A smashing success!'

Jerry Parks may have a doctorate in theology, but it has not made him intellectually stuffy, or rendered him incapable of communicating effectively with young people. His commentary on the book of Revelation entitled 'Dragons, Grasshoppers & Frogs!' was designed to communicate with teens, and it is a smashing success. I was absolutely fascinated by the book. When I started reading it, I just could not put it down. I was shouting `Halleluiah¿ by the end of the very first chapter. Dr. Parks is obviously a person who really knows and understands Bible prophecy in general, and the book of Revelation in particular. And, he has been blessed with formidable communication skills. When I wrote to Dr. Parks to congratulate him on the book, I asked him how he had come up with the idea of writing hit. He replied: 'The idea came from my middle school, after-school prayer group. They wanted to learn Revelation. To write a handbook simple enough for teens to 'wade' across, and yet thorough enough for new Christians to learn from was a daunting task.' Dr. Parks is a middle school teacher in Lexington, Kentucky, where he teaches at Southland Christian Church HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

'I could not put it down!'

Yesterday I finally got around to the book you so graciously sent me last December. I started reading it last night, and I could not put it down! I was shouting, 'Hallelujah,' by the end of the very first chapter! I am now about half way through the book, and I can hardly wait to finish it. Congratulations on a first rate job!

'If I could choose only one book on Revelation...'

I was surprised by this title, and honestly did not associate it with a book on the Revelation of Jesus Christ. I understand the title better now that I know, but I would imagine those looking for a commentary on Revelation won't recognize this as one. What a shame. This is a wonderfully exhaustive little handbook. As I appreciate in others' reviews, I will cut to the chase. Those who will enjoy this book are: 1. Those who want a very simplified, organized, easy to digest commentary on Revelation. 2. Those who espouse a 'rapture' of believers before the coming of Antichrist, and believe in a LITERAL Kingdom of Christ on earth someday. 'One Cool Kingdom to Come!' is a fascinating chapter. 3. Anyone who wants a very Christ-centered commentary on this subject. Jesus is very much emphasized. ('Getting to Know Jesus' is a discussion from every chapter. Really interesting is the personal 'letter' from Christ at the end based upon the messages to the seven churches.) 4. Young people, and teachers of Revelation. This is a book that breaks down every chapter into nicely labeled sections, such as 'Nutshell' (a paragraph explanation of each chapter), 'Focus locus' (themes that run through the whole Bible and finish in Revelation), 'Backpack for the Road' (principles to use in life), and my favorite: 'Nuts to crack!', which simply explains EVERY important word in each chapter. This was especially helpful to me since I am a novice on Revelation. 5. Christians who want PRACTICAL applications from this mysterious book. I have never seen a commentary with so many 'Journal for the Journey' reflection questions. VERY HELPFUL to me here. 6. Those wanting a modern discussion of Revelation rather than a scholarly, in-depth heavyweight book. The book even mentions Hurricane Katrina and the Bird flu virus! I especially liked the chapter titles 'Seven Emails from Jesus', 'Frogs Calling Men to War!', 'City Without a Cemetery', etc. These will definitely appeal to youth, and 'Ten Things to Watch For as Revelation Nears' is especially intriguing. There aren't' many concerns about the book, but a few might be: 1. The title. Many will not associate it with Revelation. 2. The theology. If you don't go with full Inspiration, or see Revelation as mostly future, you might have a bit of trouble. 3. I wish there were an index. Although wonderfully organized, there is SO much material in just 124 pages--and that includes the whole Scripture text of Revelation too! 4. With so many thought-provoking insights, I would like to have seen perhaps some type of workbook format. This might have been helpful, but I guess it wouldn't be a 'handbook' anymore, would it? As you can tell, the book is organized as a 'pocket handbook', and everything is geared toward brevity and simplicity. (The cover is the back pocket of blue jeans.) I stand amazed that so much material could be contained in so little space, and read so well. In summary, if I could take only one book on Revelation with me on a long journey, this would be it. It is digestible, but very thorough. I understood from reading his 'With Joseph in the University of Adversity' (much more complex, by the way), that Mr. Parks is a middle school teacher. Believe me, in this fine book--it shows!

    Revelation Made Clear to Everyone

Dr. Parks has written a wonderful book, not only for teens, but also for adults. You can read on your own or use it as part of a Bible study or Sunday-school class. Dragons, Grasshoppers, and Frogs brings clarity to a book that daunts many and has led many who 'read the back of the book first' to grief. Dr. Parks brings clarity to the Book of Revelation by breaking it down into brief explanations of chapters, clarifications of terms, pictures of Christ, points for personal application, and topics for discussion. He speaks directly to you without speaking down to you, so that you can read the book straight through, or sample each chapter, with both pleasure and enlightenment. Dr. Parks teaches the Book of Revelation from the viewpoint that the Rapture occurs before the Tribulation, and the Second Coming of Christ after it. He avoids the pitfalls of 'date-setting' and tying the book into trendy, sensationalistic 'current events.' In fact, he clearly points out to you all of these pitfalls, so that you can avoid them, too. To keep you centered on what God truly wants of us, Dr. Parks clearly shows how the Book of Revelation goes back to the earlier books of the Bible, and above all to the life of Christ. Dr. Park's book is solid and reliable because he sees that the Book of Revelation isn't 'The Revelation of St. John the Divine.' Still less is it 'The Revelation of the Beast and the False Prophet,' though sensationalizers concentrate on them at the cost of many other important truths. Dr. Parks lets us know that The Book of Revelation is 'The Revelation of Jesus Christ.' By focusing on our Savior and Lord, Dr. Parks has ensured that he added nothing to the book and left nothing out of it. He has heeded the call of seekers of truth through the ages: 'Sirs, we would see Jesus.'

Dragons, Grasshoppers, and Frogs: A Pocket Guide To The Book of Revelation For Teenagers And Newbies

This book is a refreshingly easy help for a complex subject! The Book of Revelation can be confusing to those of us who are new to the Bible. Dragons, Grasshoppers, and Frogs puts the information needed to understand this book at a level that even beginners can understand what God is meaning to tell us! The message of Revelation is one we all need to really understand as Christ's return nears, and this book is a great book to keep on hand while trying to decifer the messages. Mr. Parks manages to be clear, concise, and yet keep the scriptural meanings intact for his readers. There are so many strange and confusing images (like the Dragons, Grasshoppers, and Frogs mentioned in the title) that a new reader absolutely needs help. This book puts all that information on an easy to understand level, and guides the reader into a deeper understanding of God's word. I highly recommend this book to ANYONE wishing to know more about the prophecies of Revelation, but especially to teenagers and newer scholars of the Word!
