Overview

Join the RBI—a group of teen agents with special gifts—on a series of action-packed adventures as they travel the world!

The coast of Japan is being terrorized by a mysterious creature. The RBI are sent to investigate sightings of red glowing eyes that peer out of sea mists and an enormous beast that breathes fire and tramples cars. A trip to Japan reveals a bizarre inventor and stories of a slumbering sea dragon. Is their mission linked to the old legend of the “Dragon’s Triangle” and its tales of disappearing ships?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
You may have heard of the X-Men, a group of crime fighters with unusual super powers. Get ready for the RBI, a group of young investigators with unusual super powers. Like the X-Men, the RBI members train in secret; also similar, their training facility is in an old mansion. The Ripley's Bureau of Investigation members also have a mentor—a teacher named Mr. Cain, who is supported by the gadget-savvy Mr. Maxwell. Unlike the X-Men, the RBI is not out to defeat villains. At least, that is not their primary goal. Rather, their efforts are on behalf of the RIPLEY database; they investigate phenomena to determine whether or not it is unique enough to be accorded the honor of inclusion in the database. Each investigation is handled by three of the seven RBI agents, working as a team and chosen according to their specific talents. During each case, it is a sure thing that they will be head-to-head with members of the DUL (Department of Unbelievable Lies), a rival agency whose only goal seems to be to discredit the RBI and the RIPLEY database. The initial pages of the book provide context, explaining the setting and sharing brief bios of each RBI member. The last pages show the new database entry, give a passage of the next book in the series, present facts about several related "unbelievable" items (in this case, primarily large robots), advertise the series' web site tie-in, and include trading cards. The characters are one-dimensional, but the action is fast-paced and this may appeal to some readers. Book 2 of the "Ripley's Bureau of Investigation" series includes agents Alek Filipov (a Russian contortionist "with amazing physical strength"), Zia Mendoza (who possesses "magnetic and electrical powers" and an ability "to predict the weather"), and Max Johnson (a "computer genius and inventor"). The trio is assigned to travel to the coast of Japan, where a mysterious red-eyed creature is causing widespread destruction. At the same time, they are to review a new robot whose inventor hopes for RIPLEY recognition. From the makers of Ripley's Believe It or Not! Reviewer: Heidi Hauser Green
