Overview

The beautiful planet Pern seemed a paradise to its new colonists - until unimaginable terror turned it into hell. Suddenly deadly spores were falling like silver threads from the sky, devouring everything - and everyone - in their path. It began to look as if the colony, cut off from Earth and lacking the resources to combat the menace, was doomed.

Then some of the colonists noticed that the small, dragonlike lizards that inhabited their new world were joining the fight against Thread, breathing fire on it and teleporting to safety. If only, they thought, the dragonets were big enough for a human to ride and intelligent enough to work as a team with a rider...

And so they set their most talented geneticist to work to create the creatures Pern so desperately needed - Dragons!

When the earth-like planet Pern is attacked, small dragon-like lizards help the colonists fight against the Thread. 5 cassettes.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Readers who for two decades have been following the fortunes of the dragonriders and other inhabitants of the planet Pern will welcome the latest volume, chronicling the early years. It stands very much on its own, however; knowing about the later history of the planet only adds enjoyment. After 15 years of cold sleep, 6000 colonists land on Pern, seeking a simpler existence, escaping the aftermath of interstellar war and an overly technical society. The colony prospers until the consuming Threada force that destroys all life it comes in contact withmakes its first appearance. A brilliant bio-engineer attempts to develop a biological weapon to save them, a much larger version of a native life form many of the colonists have adopted as pets: dragonets with the ability to teleport and breathe flame after eating phosphoric rock. The book ends with the first successful result of that experiment. Many richly developed characters people the novel, among them two youngsters, Sorka Hanrahan and Sean Connell, who grow up to become two of the first dragonriders. One hopes McCaffrey, who most recently has been writing in the mainstream ( The Lady ), is beginning a new Pern cycle in which she will tell, in answer to many other questions, whatever happened to the intelligent dolphins that came with the humans to Pern. Library Journal
When the deadly silver ``threadfall'' from an orbiting comet threatens to destroy the thriving human colony on the otherwise hospitable planet Pern, scientists and genetic engineers undertake a bold and risky experiment to change the tiny native winged reptiles called fire lizards into allies for mutual survival. While fans of the ``Dragonriders of Pern'' novels will particularly enjoy the revelations in this prequel to the series, newcomers will find McCaffrey's latest an accessible introduction to the world of Pern. Recommended. JC

    Entertaining Origins Tale

If you're already a fan of Anne McCaffey's Pern, you'll love this book. I'm not so sure of it as an introduction though if you're not already enchanted by them, despite that this story would be the first chronologically. It might be best to try the original trilogy first, which I think has the most appealing characters and engaging plot. But as someone who does love her books, I loved seeing all the origins for the Pern which I had become so familiar. In this novel, its the planet and culture around it which McCaffrey created which is the most involving character. The story also underlines the science fiction underpinnings of Pern with its lost colony plot--the other novels, despite that background read more like high fantasy. This reads more like space opera.

    Fantastic

If your a fan of the series and read the first three books atleast, this is going to be a incredible fun book. It takes you back to the beginning of the whole story. Some of the character's names you have already seen in the past books, Telgar, Benden, etc. It starts off a little slow, but about half way through you'll have trouble putting this book down. If you never read any of the other novels or short stories, I think you'll still enjoy this book.

    Review from a Pern Fan

I thought this book was an excellent emample of McCaffery's skill. I am a big fan of the Pern series and it was nice to see some new faces. This book answered alot of my questions about the origins of the dragons. However, I would not recommend this book for a light reader, someone who is distracted from the storyline easily. Dragondawn starts off kind of slow and their is alot of information to absorb. Overall I thought this was an excellent book.

    None the greater

This is the best. I felt almost honored to be reading about when the settlers came to Pern. It was really great. I was taken by surprise alot even when i knew what everything was like the fire-lizards, and Thread, it was still amazing!!!!!

    Dragonsdawn is Brilliant

Anne McCaffrey fully exploited the technology of our time. This book did not get so caught up in the future that it forgot how people trully think, feel and express themselves. McCaffrey knew how people acted, responded and she gave each person his or her own unique personalities, even the dragons.

Pern. 1867. 20 Pass. Gavi and Sarah.

Gavi flys up to sit on Sarah's padded shoulder. She cheeps angrily for more food. She feeds her only a little bit of cornbread, trying to wean Gavi off of it. (Gavi is a green fire-lizard and Sarah is her owner)

I've read the Pern series since I was a teenager (so long ago!)

I've read the Pern series since I was a teenager (so long ago!) and occasionally revisit it to escape into McCaffrey's wonderfully envisioned world. I bought DragonsDawn for my Nook because my paperback type was too small, and couldn't believe how many typos and errors there are in the electronic version that aren't in the print version. It was distracting and annoying, especially as the Nook book is rather expensive, just a dollar less than the current paperback. This carelessness seems to be a trend in e-books, and publishers need to take more care with quality control.

    DragonsDawn

If you love the dragonriders series this is a definite must have. This book is slow as most back-story books are but it fills in the history of PERN and how the dragonriders came to be. Some people may not like the story style but I find it interesting as it highlights how the PERN society came to be. It tells the story of the prominent families and future heroes of Pern & how their past is reflected in the actions they take to protect Pern.

It filled in all of the blanks

This book was not my absolute favorite, but it did answer a lot of questions and things that were left out of other books. In my opinion, it was like a base for all the other books. The storyline was kinda all over the place, but i did like Sean and Sorka's little romance and adventure in the beginning. Altogether, it was a good book
