Overview

First published in 1944, Dragonwyck was a national bestseller that was made into a major motion picture starring Gene Tierney and Vincent Price in 1946. A classic gothic romance, the story features an 18-year-old Miranda Wells who falls under the spell of a mysterious old mansion and its equally fascinating master. Tired of churning butter, weeding the garden patch, and receiving the dull young farmers who seek her hand in marriage, Miranda is excited by an invitation from the upstate New York estate of her distant relative, the intriguing Nicholas Van Ryn. Her passion is kindled by the icy fire of Nicholas, the last of the Van Ryns, and the luxury of Dragonwyck, and a way of life of which she has only dreamed. Dressed in satin and lace, she becomes part of Dragonwyck, with its Gothic towers, flowering gardens, acres of tenant farms, and dark, terrible secrets. This compelling novel paints a marvelous portrait of a country torn between freedom and feudal traditions; a country divided between the very wealthy and the very poor. Poor tenant farmers at Dragonwyck, the European royalty who visit, and American icons such as Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, and the Astors are vividly brought to life. This is a heart-stopping story of a remarkable woman, her breathtaking passions, and the mystery and terror that await her in the magnificent hallways of Dragonwyck.

    I Also Recommend:

There are better Gothic novels to read

Overall I had fairly high expectations for this book, and I was disapointed. It feels like the novel we all tried to write at fifteen after reading Jane Eyre. That said, I've read much better, and much much worse. Bottom line, Jane Austen wrote the perfect gothic satire, Charlotte Bronte wrote the perfect gothic romance, and Louisa May Alcott wrote the perfect gothic tragedy. This book is just not on par with great fiction.

    Good Read

It took me a bit to get into this book, but I'm glad I stuck with it. It's a great love story, though it was pretty dark. I would recommend it.

    Not the best

I read this book and enjoyed it enough as a was reading it...though it is a very quick read...but after I finished and thought about it, it seemed...well, just bad. The characters were shallow and very stereotypical, rather than individual people. Also, the storyline was unbelievable, with many convenient, but improbable envents. Also, the whole way through, I felt like I was reading a bad imitation of Jane Eyre, with prehaps a little bit of Rebecca mixed in to the story. Despite all this, however, if you are looking for a quick, frivilous read, this would not be a bad choice.

    Great Gothic Novel

This is a great gothic novel that will leave the reader hauntingly satisfied. This is the first book I have read by Seton, but it will not be the last! There are too few of these books written, now.

A Great Read Over and Over!

I was first given this book when I was a teen by my mother. I have read it many times over the years. I just recently read it again and love it as much as ever and I am now 38! It is my all time favorite book. The characters have become move vivid with every read and I get sucked into the story every time.

    Wonderful

This is a wonderful book with many different twists and turns. It has great characters and Anya Seton put everything into awesome perspectives. I had to read and novel for school and my teacher recommended this book, and I just loved it. I would recommend it to anyone.

    Great Book

This book was excellent, I read it about three months ago and(just like KATHERINE)was unable to put it down. I love how Anya Seton wrote it. I love the way the story ends up having a twist at the end. When I came to the part my reaction was 'Oh my Gawd!' This is a truly great gothic, romance novel. If you love KATHERINE you might love this.
