Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathleen Karr
Here is the deluxe version of Dr. Ernest Drake's Dragonology Handbook of 2005. An embossed and highly-decorated cloth cover and a ribbon marker have been added to this spoof of late Victorian pedagogy. Printed on suitably faded and worn pages complete with ink splotches—not to mention Art Nouveau endpapers—Dr. Drake's course is presented for young scholars interested in the Secret and Ancient Society of Dragonologists. Committees of writers usually fall flat, but this group obviously has a sense of humor that led to a lot of fun in the creation process. A Linnaean Table suitably sets the beasties within sound scientific parameters. A world map pinpoints locations of various dragon clans. Suggestions for identification (e.g., using toe comparisons) are given. A proper index completes the backmatter of riddles and more. The end result is entertaining to page through, and kids who have already plumbed the depths of dinosaur literature will find it to be a pretty good introduction to the genre of fantasy. Gr 4 Up—"Written" by the fictional late-19th-century dragonologist Ernest Drake, this book offers everything kids might want to know about dragons. It's disguised as nonfiction and bound in an elaborate turn-of-the-20th-century cover with detailed illustrations on every page. Topics include a dragon's scales; how to distinguish males from females (females are tidier); the various species, including the difference between a basilisk and a wyvern; and how fire-breathing actually works (some dragons possess a "spark pouch" that ignites their venom, allowing them to shoot flames 100 yards). The volume will draw young readers with an interest in dragons, and will be an appealing browsing item for fantasy fans.—Walter Minkel, Austin Public Library, TX
