ABOUT THE BOOK
After earning some serious critical and popular acclaim as an unsigned, indie artist, Drake has grown to become one of raps hottest acts.
Born on October 24, 1986, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, as Aubrey Drake Graham, Drake is the product of a unique and diverse background. His mother, Sandi Graham, is a white Jewish Canadian, and his father, a drummer for Jerry Lee Lewis, is African-American. When Drake was five years old, his parents divorced. He was raised primarily by his mother in the Forest Hill neighborhood, an affluent Toronto community, although he frequently visited his father in Memphis, Tennessee.
Drake began making a name for himself when he landed a role on the popular teenage-sitcom Degrassi: The Next Generation. According to Biography.com, Drake received this role after auditioning for a classmates father who worked as a talent scout. The show was extremely popular, propelling Drake to celebrity status in Canada, even while he remained relatively anonymous in the United States.

EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK
In 2009, Drake released his third mixtape, So Far Gone, and when the single, Best I Ever Had, hit number two on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, it sparked a fierce bidding war between record labels. Drake eventually signed with Universal Motown, and the label quickly released the So Far Gone EP. Although being signed to a big-name label certainly accelerated Drakes popularity, its to his credit that he achieved success before signing to a major record label, establishing himself as a rapper capable of independently writing, recording, distributing, and performing top-selling hits.
A year after signing with Universal Motown, Drake released his first full-length studio album, Thank Me Later. This recording was an instant success, hitting number one on both U.S. and Canadian music charts, and selling over 1 million copies. With this album, Drake won the 2010 BET Award for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist, along with the Juno Award for New Artist of the Year.
Drake built on this success with the 2011 release of Take Care, which also peaked at the top spot on both U.S. and Canadian charts, selling over one million records, and earning platinum certification in the United States.
