Children's Literature - Loretta Caravette
This story is part of the "Ghostly Graphic Adventures" series. As the series name implies, Drama At Dungeon Rock is a graphic centered tale. The story is simple: two boys, Joey and Tank, are out fishing with their Uncle when a ghost ship appears. The Uncle tells them the legend of the1650 pirate ship that sailed up the river looking for a place to hide their treasure. No one knows what happened to the ship but the pirates were eventually found and arrested. One pirate, Thomas Veal, escaped and was rumored to live in a nearby cave, Dungeon Rock, where a large part of the treasure was supposed to be buried. In 1658 rocks from an earthquake trapped the pirate and his treasure inside. He still haunts the cave keeping would be treasure seekers from finding his loot. As the ghost ship gets closer, Joey and Tank decide that it might be the pirates coming back to claim their treasure. They follow the ghosts and go to the mouth of the cave now filled in with rocks. Treasure hunters caused more cave-ins because they used explosives to try and find the treasure. There is a small hole where visitors can go inside. The boys enter the cave alone, ad have an adventure to remember. This is a fun and interesting story for beginning readers especially boys. The storyline is simple and easy to follow. There is a glossary in the back for unfamiliar words. The illustrations are good. The best part—it is based on a true story. Reviewer: Loretta Caravette
