Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Set at a comic convention, this story shouldn't be as entertaining and fun as it is. But it's a little gem: the plot trips along, and though the art is good, not breathtaking, the Russian-born Canadian artist/author has clearly mastered the now international visual language of manga. The heroine is Chris, a self-willed girl who is taken for granted by her boyfriend, Derek. Chris meets the dark and mysterious Matt, who seems to understand her completely, and hijinks ensue. Sounds corny as hell, but the narrative is smart, witty and moving. The characters tap into the manga archetypes, which makes them breathe and have moments of being larger-than-life. Chris goes through self-doubt to self-knowledge and learns a bit of bravery along the way. It's astonishing to reflect that all the action takes place in the hotel rooms and convention floors where kids sell their homemade comics. Under the noses of adults, these "cons" have slipped into popular culture as a new land of rebels, mentors and wisdom-what road trips and the Haight once were. They're a perfect place for a growing-up story. Using every visual manga convention to its fullest, this ripping little tale is strong and expressive enough to reveal real emotional depth. (Nov.) more from this reviewer

    from missprint.wordpress.com

Christie isn't sure what to think at her first comic convention in Dramacon Vol. 1 (2005) by Svetlana Chmakova. She excited for a chance to exhibit the comic that she writes and her boyfriend illustrates. But when they get to the comic-con, it turns out nothing is what Christie expected.

Her boyfriend is a jerk. He says he's flirting so that more girls will buy their comic buy Christie isn't so sure--especially with the way he keeps leaving her alone for long periods at a time. Then there's the mysterious cosplayer who keeps popping up when Christie needs him and seems to understand her better than her boyfriend ever will. Christie tries to make sense of her mixed feelings about the con and her love life in the foreground of a story that offers a tantalizing behind-the-scenes look at an convention no one is likely to forget!

Manga always gets a bad rap as the the "junk food" of the comic/graphic novel world. Truth be told, the junk food analogy always seems ridiculous when applied to books. Reading is reading and, frankly, I'd rather see someone reading manga or Goosebumps or whatever than not reading at all. Furthermore, I challenge anyone to find a better format for reluctant readers. If I could read Dramacon in a day I'm sure a reluctant reader could motor through it just as easily. And what is more thrilling for a kid who thinks they are a "slow" reader or who doesn't like reading than to find a title they can plow through?

That said, Dramacon is also a really delightful story that is cute, peppy and will leave you smiling. This crazy sense of optimism and cheer permeates the book that will make it impossible to feel gloomy while reading it--really! (And the artwork is really great and well-plotted besides!)

The first in a three volume series, Chmakova gives readers action, romance and a surprising amount of character development given the relatively short format. Christie and her zany cohorts are really charming characters that I can't wait to read more about.

The crossover potential is also huge because Dramacon covers so many topics: comic conventions, cosplay, relationships, coming of age, and even rape are all briefly (tactfully) touched upon here. Girls might gravitate to the pink cover, but boys are sure to appreciate Matt's brooding, macho character. Dramacon is, basically, one of those mangas that can literally appeal to everyone.

    Dramacon: Romance for anyone.

Dramacon is romance story that I fell in love with at the very begining. I think that the farther the writer goes, the more people with read. I mean, a girl who already has a boyfriend, that a given. But a girl who has a boyfriend and falls for another, that's also a given. But then a girl who has a boyfriend and falls for another and can only see him once a year at an anime convintion, that's all natural. This book got me hooked in the first few pannels!

Fruits Basket Lovers Have GOT to Read This

It's very much like Fruits Basket in the way that it is half funny/silly laugh-out-loud and half the serious romance. It's cute! It gives you that shojo-y goodness without being too mushy. It's REAL.

Very nice book, and I wouldn't have read it if my friend hadn't bought it...So thank her for getting me sucked into the world of Dramacon! I love the art, it's not the greatest I've seen, but it's admirable. The plot is great, an amateur writer(Christie) goes to her first anime convention with her boyfriend, whom is an artist. She discovers along the way(With the help of cosplaying Matt, of course) that her boyfriend isn't the best for her(Or anyone, for that matter). This book is absolutely hilarious, and the second one's out! -Cheers- Although, I definitely would've enjoyed it more if it was in authentic manga format. XD Although, this is from a Russian artist(Whom is awesome) so, yeah... Overall, this book is great, and you should definitely pick up a copy. ^^

it's like your reliving the con

I adore this manga! It reminded me of my first con and how i was so confused and lost, and just didn't know what to do. I love how the little things are made to stand out just like at a real con, and the people drawn in cosplay!!! The art-style is different from what i've seen and I like that too, everythings realistic. I really do love this manga and i'm looking forward to following volumes.

    Funny and romantic!!!

A Humerous book, filled with romance and comedy! The mysterious guy who can be quiet often falls for a girl who has a temper, friendliness, and a low class boyfriend!! But when things get a little bit more than dramatic, can they still see each other? This is a GREAT manga!

    Dramacon: A Must

I love this manga. Finally, a manga we can truely relate to. If you've ever been to an anime convention, you'll feel right at home. From wity satire to gut-wrenching dramatics, this manga reels you in hook, line and sinker! I cannot wait for the second volume to come out. This is one that every manga lover should have in their collection. Plus the toning is excellent! Svetlana scored big with this one.

    Great Manga!!! X3

This is one of the best mangas I've read in a while! It has everything: original plot, adorable characters, and beautiful art! Not to mention all the necessary con stereotypes (i.e. 'Pawky' XD) This will surely help to tide me over before AnimeBoston next year!!!
